I'm flying out in the morning to get my new Westie puppy from an Arizona breeder. I've been planning for this baby girl for more than a year. I've spent many obsessive hours trying to decide on the perfect name. Came down to either Maisie or Harlow. Everyone in my family is giving me grief. No matter what I come up with, they hate it, and I don't like their suggestions either. I know at the end of the day it's my decision, but I'm feeling discouraged at this moment and am pretty much a blank slate. I would love it if all the cool, creative people on this Board would suggest girl names for a Westie - one that I hope will turn out to be a show dog - she has three Best of Breed Westminster winners on both the dam and the sire side. Her pappa won Westminster (breed) two years in a row, so clearly she has great potential and I want to give her a name befitting a future champion. If she turns out to be pet quality only, I'll love her even more, but either way she needs a wonderful name. I'm wide open, please help.

Your show name doesn't have to be her call name ....it will hit you when you meet her !!

I think "Maisie" is cute!

I truely do think that picking a name is just about the most stressful part of pet ownership! I'm so bad with names, I've had a pet rat for almost two years who has never had a name - she's just "the rat." When I had two, they were "the hairless" and "the other." :) I was lucky that my dog came with a really great name, I was able to keep the name her previous owner gave her. And my cat only has a name for the vet, I just call her "kitty."

This is why I don't have kids.

Good luck!

I love those names, Maizy(that's how i would spell it) and Harlow. I also like the name Teagan or pretty much any name that starts with a T. Maisie is nice and girly but I don't think Harlow is very "girly". I had a girl dog once named Paizleigh or Paisley if you like "normal" spellings which I don't lol Well let me know what you think.

I like Maisie. When we were thinking about getting a pup and hadn't decided on girl or boy we'd thought about Macie for a girl.

My daughter (aged 10) wants a Westie and wants to call it Bagpipes !!!! (strange child lol)

Thank you for your encouragement Dog Gurl. Harlow, I must admit, entered my head cuz I read that Nicole Richie named her new baby girl Harlow. I don't care much about Nicole Richie and her new baby girl (though I wish them well), but I started thinking that Jean Harlow was a famous platinum blonde bombshell from the 30's, and Westies could be considered platinum blondes. It seemed to fit. But nobody in my family likes it. What to do? I've posted this message in the General post and the Puppy post, and many people have given me positive feedback about Maisie. Maybe I'll go with that. I don't know what to do. I'm so burned out with the whole endeavor that I don't care anymore. Whatever her name turns out to be will be inconsequential to the essence and love she will bring to our home. She could be Poopsie and she'll be magical in my heart. Thanks for your input and well wishes.

I'm so glad I found this site. You guys make me laugh. Especially Lizzybeth and Miss Jack's daughter (Bagpipe?!). I've gotten several positive comments about Maisie, which I like also, maybe I'll go with that. I think it's going to come to me when I meet her. She's one of seven. The breeder and I have become great Cyber friends and she's reserving the 2nd best in the litter for me (1st for herself). I'm very honored and can't wait to meet this special little girl. Thank you Everyone for your suggestions and encouragement.

I think once you see her you will start calling her something and it will stick. I didn't name my dog for about 3 days after I got him just so I could make sure it was the right choice.

How exciting! : ) I have met some Westies with adorable names... most of them Scottish. Most of them "Duff" or "Duffy". hehe. I've gotta admit, I really don't like the name Harlow. It makes me think of "Harlot", which means hooker. Yick.

I always liked the name Maizy for a girl. Tuppence is adorable, Sharkbait, it reminds me of that Mary Poppins song. x3

Here's a few girl names that I like:
Hana (flower)
Mitsu (shine)
Suki (beloved)
Reagan (nobility)
Gwenneth (blessed)
Calla (dove)
Hula (dance)
Fiji
Rhea
Soleil
Zoe
Fable
Fleur
Guinevere
