I think if people come plowing in here saying it is alarmist hype, then they are TRUELY missing the point.

I hope they don't, Diz. I hope people take the time to read it all very carefully.

Makes the Amish seem a little less "odd" now, doesn't it? We're all going to be scrambling to pick up some, if not all, of their habits and lifestyles and the learning curve on that is going to be...disasterous.

It's all good and well thinking "well, it won't happen in my lifetime" but.... errr... hello?

You have kids/want kids? What about your future generations?

Too many numbers.

Is it basically saying oil will run out and we'll all be using horse n buggies? That's fine with me...I've said that's the way to go for years.

Of course then the price of horses and tack, buggies and feed will skyrocket, so not sure that the economy will change. Ditto if people switch to bikes...heating their homes with wood, etc. Somebody will get rich and the rest will make do how best they can.

Sooner or later it will all run out... But, there are un-exploited reserves still available all over the world. The problem is how do we get it out of the ground? A lot of different reasons exist as to why this oil cannot be exploited. Some of it is in places where it is very difficult to physically get to it. Then there are the political/environmental reasons as to why we cannot get it.

I think when push comes to shove one of two things will happen.

A.) We will have the technology to exploit the resources that are physically difficult to reach. Also, either our leaders will have realized that humanity NEEDS these resources and allow them to be cheaply exploited, or we the people will have changed our government so it can be done. Then, life goes on more or less as we know it.

B.) The world experiences a MASSIVE population decrease... (No oil = No Food in amounts necessary = LOTS of people die) To the tune of billions. Life returns to a 17th-18th century style.

Frankly, i'd rather see option A happen. Because with option A, we can continue to enjoy the lifestlye we now have. Also, with option A, we finally get serious about the need for plentiful, cheap and CLEAN energy. But I feel I am ready as possible to attempt to survive option B. With option B, I weep for urban populations who have no concept of how to survive...

To me it will get much worse before it gets better ......we've been a pretty lucky country ...... and spoiled compared to most parts of the world . Teens expect to live the lives their parents are living . Something has to give and I hope for all our babies that leaders will step up . I won't see it in my lifetime ............... it won't be fun folks !

didn't get a chance to come back on yesterday. OK..I'm NOT trying to be 'doomsday Deb' here. but.......YES, the resources are here for oil. but...by the time we spend the monies to extract it, it will be far beyond the crucial point. also.......it is well documented that what we have...once operations do begin...will not be enough for the entire economy. and as we all know nothing will be cheaply exploited. so...my point was to show a possibility......and simply say, fasten your seatbelts. the $4.00 a gal. gas will soon be considered dream cheap. that said...it only means perhaps...and this is just solely my opinion.......people should plan for a major downturn. not a recession, but a true depression. therefore, it wouldn't hurt to get back to basics just a little. and if the economy doesn't spur your gut...then back to basics just happens to be cheaper and healthier.

I was kind of surprised that more people didn't have thoughts, but again..it isn't grand to think about. so...who wants to, right?!! lol maybe we'll talk more when gas is well over the $4. amount. :)

Grocery co-ops.

Support your local farmer and support your immediate community. Often the produce is organic, and the money goes directly to YOUR hometown, not a mega-business.

It's not much, but it's a start. It's a great way to go 'green' in your own house. (less packaging, less polution due to local shipping and often organic.)

Grocery or meat co-ops seem like small business, but if enough of us support our own communities, maybe we can lift ourselves up above the recession, and help someone else while we are at it.

(I'm brand spanking new to the forums, but this topic caught my eye. I have been researching co-ops in my area.)

I love the idea of supporting your own community. but this goes far beyond 'going green'. do that because you will get healthier food and support your local farmer. :)

and if this doesn't make you think of anything else. do this......take a little tip from my granny.....put a little cash stash away in a very safe place/home fireproof box. let yourself at least be open to the thought of a true depression. and then prepare yourself. anyone that thinks they are beyond what 'poor' people will experience...you are in for a big awakening. for once.....look at these types of articles with an honest, open mind. not radical thinking here.......it's our future.

10 tips to save gas
Hypermiling in your car... great way to save gas (started trying some of them... actually works!)

Anyways... interesting article with a different approach then the usual doom and gloom of "we're running out!".

there are and always will be articles/thoughts against the 'doom and gloom' as you say. I've done massive research, and it isn't a silly thought that 'we're running out'.....BUT...to each their own. heck...I don't even care if you listen..or care. :) what I am saying, for the last time (because I have my beliefs, you have yours) is.......the thought that $4. a gal for gas being a big deal is moot. it will go beyond that. wayy beyond that, and we'll have to learn to deal with it. again......maybe this will be more important when it hits the bigger mark. not sure what that is for some people, but I think it's better to walk life with my eyes wide open rather than my head in the sand. not to say I don't intend to enjoy life.......LOL or be a gloomer gal. but I know when to be intelligent about the economy, and I know when to simply shut up. :)

altho..it is amazing that anyone thinks some simple fuel savings in their vehicle makes a difference. lawdy.....it's so beyond that.........

and I also know that if you somehow feel excluded because you have a certain higher income...........YOU will be in for the bigger shock . lol

I don't see how when somebody posts 2 lines, one saying your article is interesting and another on how people can conserve some of the fuel they use is supposed to do any good but hey if belittling people is the way you want to carry on a discussion then more power to you.

Sparks19: Hypermiling is changing your driving techniques or how you drive your car in order to get the most out of your gas mileage.
Some things should only be done by professional drivers... but you'll find you can increase the mileage of your car by making a few simply changes (the slideshow I posted from Forbes).
Things like not idling, if you turn your car off when you know you'll be sitting for longer then 10 seconds (even at traffic lights). Making sure you have the proper tire pressure, going 60mph highway instead of speeding (tried this... actually made a difference... I was surprised).
Coasting to stop signs and traffic lights instead of staying on the gas then hitting the breaks so that your just using friction to slow your car.
All actually pretty simple just different from our way of thinking (well maybe tire pressure is something some people check often).
You can increase you're mileage pretty significantly... only just started with some of these but I'm noticing the difference and have added a full days driving (about 100km) before I needed another fill up... not huge but it's a start :)

By doing all 10 things in that slide your supposed to be able to double your mileage... I don't know about that but hey anything that saves gas right now sounds good to me :)

A LOT of driving is a understatement... LOL I hit 100,000 miles today. 4 years to the exact day I bought the car.

I blame Tanya... All those trips to Canada when we had to be seperated.
