Today was a really sad day :( One of our customer has 3 Gdanes. To day she took them outside early in the moorning for about 20 to 30min for them to do their "thing" after that she called them back for them to go inside and only 2 came back:(. When she went looking for the dog she found it laying next to the pool dead. She called screaming at our vets office we couldn't uderstand what she was saying.. and then she hung up and about 5min latter she call saying that her dog was dead and she was going to bring her in.

The most sad thind it that the dog was only 9 months old and she was such a sweet heart. We had to put it in a bag and tagg her. It was so sad to know such sweet dog died b/c the onwner didn't keep and eye their pet.

So please when your dog is out, dont assume that juts b/c is on your property nothing can happen.

No obvious signs?
No puncture wounds from a bite of some kind? I know there are probably plenty of poisonous things in FL.

Did she have an autopsy to find out? What if her other two dogs run into the same problem :(

This could happen inside or outside if it's a heart attack . If he had drown , it would be a different story . My door is alway open for Ollie ( weather permitting ) ....I don't go out with him .

Wow! That *is* scary!
I'm surprised the owner didn't want to find out what happened, especially with two other dogs that will be out in the same yard as where it happened.

I try not to let paranoia rule my life. Sierra gets free outside time when I'm somewhere with a fenced yard, and so long as I know the yard is secure and she can't get out, I gladly leave her out there, as that's where she's happiest and wants to be!

Dogs die all the time from things we can not prevent, and accidents can just as easily happen when they are supervised. I don't live in a bubble and neither does my dog.

Just my 2 cents ;)

Thats very sad and my heart breaks for them, loss of a beloved pet is very hard.

However.... My one dog was killed outside, by a neighbors DA dog, while I stood there unable to stop it.... We lived in a different place then and did not know about the neighbors dogs issues.

My Canine "Love of my Life" died while on a walk on the farm, 20 feet from my in a hollowed out log upon meeting a skunk in the enclosed, hollowed out log....

I agree depending on your situation (IE: Live in town where other dogs may be around and so on) you should not put them out alone, but honestly I let mine out here for quick pee's etc alone, and I don't think that makes me an irresponsible owner.... I live waaaaaay off the road, on 400 acres of farm land and we have no dogs nearby. I don't let them out alone at night though because of coyotes... My neighbor has a working BC who is outside all day on their farm, she would not even be able to do her job, nor he his if "supervised" all the time. Just my opinion of course!:D

^^^^I agree, my dogs are out in the fenced backyard all the time, often all day while I am at home. Yes I check on them every once in a while and do a head count but I don't hover out there etc.

It still haunts me . Daughter Amy had booked a 3 day getaway with a friend to the Bahamas . They broke up and she invited me . At that time I really needed a break . Tom was pretty healthy and we had Bubba and Chip . We left Saturday AM and Sunday AM Bubba was laying by the window dead . It must have been awful for Tom as he knew how much Bubba meant to me . He somehow managed to get him into the garage and called daughter Jan . She had Amy's X go and take Bubba to the vets where they put him on ice for my decision . Jan wanted to call me , but was voted off as they knew how upset I'd be. We got back Tuesday and when I saw Jan's car I knew something was wrong . ( she lived 3 hours away ) . Of course I thought it was Tom when she rushed out crying saying " Mom , I'm so sorry !" Then I saw Tom and I knew . Yes, I went crazy !!! The girls stayed with me until 4 AM and the next morning I called my vet . She said it must have been his heart and I left it at that . Even on ice , it was late for an autopsy and I know he couldn't have gotten into anything . My heart dog was gone .....

as everyone else has said, accidents happen. I'm very sorry for their loss. Poor doggie!

If I was going to freak out bc of them, I would never leave my house, use the stove, or anything electric(and something would still prob happen!)

ETA: Grammy! I'm sorry for bubba! :(

That is what i was thinking Grammy. I am sorry for their loss. I do not ever let my dogs out without going with them, but this might have made no difference if they were nor not. THey should not harbor that on top of their grief. I hope your vet let them know this.

That's really sad and so unexpected. Hope it's more on health issue rather than dangerous things around that killed her dog.

My dogs are outside unattended. I can't be out there everytime they go potty..

But yes, everyone needs to be careful about it.

My friend left her 13 year old Black Labrador outside with their outdoor pool, with a tarp over it. Dog didn't realize that the tarp was not sturdy, stepped onto it, got trapped under the tarp and they came home to their lab girl drowned under the tarp.. :(

My yard is secure. My dog is outside whenever she wants to be. I refuse to restrict her freedom because something "might" happen. The world is full of what ifs.

I don't leave my dog outside alone because I am paranoid. People around here do let their dogs run every once in a while... and they leave their big dogs outside unsupervised with a little 4' fence. No doubt, if one of those wanted to clear the fence, they would. (Now, my dog has never been a jumper... but you never know!) I am also scared of someone stealing her.

If I had a pool, there would be no way, I would ever leave my dog outside unattended (unless truly secured).

But what happened in your story is, as said, a freak accident.

My dogs are left unattended in a yeard with a pool. They both know how to get out if they fall in. Both have been trained. When my male comes he will be trained to get out, just like the girls have been.

I guess what you guys are saying is true. I realy dont have a fence so I can't let my dogs run out side so I have to tie them up :(. But if it realy was a freak accident I realy feel sorry for them. Just the feeling that you go and find your dog just laying dead on the floor and knowing that you were a couple of feet away and didn't even notice gives me the creeps:(

I think if I had a pool I would put one of those fence that you put around the pool. I can't imagine my dog trying to fight for its life and drown
