That is tough. I think you should get some of the money back. How come you got the dog at ... 4 months? what kind of questions did you ask the breeder? I really hate reading about these situations.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. It might be good for your mom to educate herself on backyard breeders and puppy mills.

This is so sad for you. Try to get more info from the breeder...Obviously the poor pup fell through a few cracks . Had the pup been sold and then returned ?? He obviously didn't get the care or socialization in the beginning. What " standard " is he ?? When I bought my 2nd Golden in 1956 , I rushed in too quickly .....I bought from a very good breeder who showed and had champions. The pup was 6 months old and I was told he wasn't shaping up to show quality , so he was willing to sell. Hip displacia wasn't a big deal back then.... yup ....2 years later I learned he had very bad hips. I've always questioned whether he knew this and that's why he sold. Needless to say, it was an eye opener to me and from then on OFA testing was a must. Please keep us posted.

I was slow in posting ... I see now it is Poodle .... I'm still a little confused ...you had to put the 1st one down and this one's timid etc. ?? The first one was a rescue and the 2nd from a breeder ? If this was the case...yes, the breeder must be a BYB!!! You'll never get any adjustments from them ! You've learned a painful lesson and thus you are now put into the wonderful world of awareness of GOOD breeding and spread the word about BYBS !!! Good luck! We're here for you !

I think that you should keep it if you can. It is expensive but that dog needs a good home and if you can provide that I'm sure you'll have a great relationship. Try to talk to the breeder and find out more about the pup. She may or may not be willing to cover the expenses but hopefully she'll help out a little. The other thing you could try is contacting shelters and explaining the situation and seeing if they can help with the cost. Some of them have vets that will do things for MUCH cheaper than a regular vet clinic.

It definitely sounds as a puppy mill especially since you said the woman said she doesn't let people come to her house - that is usually a red flag when they don't want you to see where their dogs & pups are.

Parasites & worms are easily taken care of and many pups need to be treated for them. Even responsible breeders have to treat litters for worms. Parvo tests, etc. are typical expenses anyone getting a puppy have to undertake.

I understood you to say you are planning on having him neutered so the testicle problem & possibly being undersized won't affect him being a wonderful companion pet. And neither of those necessarily point to him having additional health problems.

If he was from a puppy mill he probably spent all his time in a cage and didn't receive much, if any, socialization. Remember he is now experiencing the great big world and all the new sights & activities & people that is so new to him and I am sure he is somewhat overwhelmed. With patience, consistency & lots of love I am sure you can help him blossom into the wonderful personality that is hidden right now.

Many pups also experience problems with riding in a car. My Chloe used to actually get carsick & vomit. Then she got better & just excessively drooled for about 6 months. Now she has no problem whatsoever. There are many ways to help get him used to being in the car. First just sit in the car with the doors open, w/o the car running and give him some treats. Once he's comfortable with that have your Mom start the car but not go anywhere. Then proceed to some very short car trips. Again, take it slow & he will get better.

Hopefully he will have no further problems. Your mom's heart was in the right place but unfortunately quick decisions aren't necessarily always the wisest. But he can be a wonderful furpal for you for many years to come and I think that is what your mom's ultimate goal was.
