I personally can't see a pup that size digesting or passing a bone that large....don't wait to see blood...it could be too late. Any scratching or puncturing of the bowel could bring on rapid infection.

Yes I agree. Getting an Xray couldn't hurt. Better safe than sorry. Our thoughts are with you. Keep us updated. Best of luck.

The vet say's since hes acting so normal we should wait another day.
i really hope he turns out fine :(
does it HAVE to come out.. is it impossible for his stomach to digest?
or will it have to come out one way or the other.. cause im hoping it'll just burn away

Read through the thread before you reply!

Bloopy, I do think it's possible for it to go through his system. There are people who feed their dogs cooked bones it's just not wise and this is a large bone for a pup.

I think that if you read through the OP again you will see that the bone fell from a plate!

Ever hear of making a mistake? One time I was eating chicken wings and I had the bright idea to hold the wing by the end and let my rottweiler bite the meat off with his front teeth. Well before I could react the wing bone and all dissapeared.

Bloopy- Yes please let us know.

Yeah, there are morons here next door to me that are constantly throwing their **** chicken bones in our yard(on purpose?). And I think it's coz they hate my pups. The other day one of the pups got ahold of one...thank the lord for the drop it command. It was close....

I've got similar problems. People throw their bones on the ground around and between the buildings and Tira is a sucker for anything with meat on it. Just yesterday she snatched up a chicken bone, while walking (never missed a beat) and crunched down one good time. I stopped her, had her "drop" the big piece, then pulled the splintered pieces out of her mouth before she swallowed. Later she picked up a rib bone with meat still on it but didn't bite down. Again, she dropped it when asked and I threw it away.

I guess people don't believe in TRASH CANS!

If i think it possible that my dog might have even gotten a crumb of a bone i feed them a LOT of bread. I am so bone paranoid, but once you have seen a perforated intestine and the agony a dog goes through you don't ever want to see another. especially your own.

I totally agree smkie. That's why whenever there is a bone thread I always say I'll never feed my dogs bones, no matter what kind. I was working at a vets office (vet tech) and a dog came in that couldn't poop. The vet tried numerous enemas, certain foods, medicines, nothing worked. When he "reached in" with a finger he came out with a big chunk of splintered chicken bone. After that, the dog was happy to have a good bm by himself, without crying and being in pain.

As for Tira getting the chicken bone, I don't think she swallowed any, but I did give her some bread when we got home. :) Better safe than sorry.

My old boss had old ways that use to make me insane. He would let the oldest dog that followed him around bite the gristle off his chicken bone. The only problem is the older boss got the less careful he was that all she got was the gristle. One day she swelled up like she had swallowed a hog. Her belly was enormous. He called the vet and the vet said she probably had a twisted intestine and he should put her on the ground and roll her back and forth to see if that fixed it. i have hated that vet the rest of my life..no vet should diagnose over the phone, he was just to lazy to come out. My boss and i had the most heated argument right there in the middle of the kennels. I wanted him to STOP IT NOW and he said he knew what he was doing. It wasn't my dog or my establishment and i had no rights so all i could do was leave and cry my eyes out. She died and i will bet it was from that dang chicken bone that certainly looked like it was missing about an inch to me, a heck of a lot more then the gristle. That was a terribly long time ago. One thing that is very hard when working with the elderly and their pets is getting past the "old ways" especially when it comes to medications and feed. We know so much more now and a whole lot of it is wiser.
