need help with a dog. he is a 2 year old pitbull who was previsouly abused and who spent most of his life outside.
recently he has gotten used to being inside, he eats good, does suprisingly well with kids.
but my problem is obediance. i was told that the dog was better off being put down, but i thought i would give it a shot.

he is terrified of a leash and chain, so any ideas what else i could use?
ive been working with this dog for 8 months now, also.

I would try using like a leather collor or a nylon collor, I can see why the chain would freak him out. As for a leash try a rounded climbing rope lead, you can find them on Dog.com and if you even go to an agility trial thats what they use for the dogs in agility. I'm suggesting this cuz may be he wont find that so threteing. For SURE get rid of the chain.

Then just get him usted to the collor and leash like you would a puppy, just let him where it around the house, and if the fact that its draging behind him freaks him out tie the leash like in half so it just kind of hangs there like a tab, that way it may not freak him so much, then once he is good with that make the leash longer, but DONE pick it up yet, your JUST getting him usted to it.

This will take A LOT of paicents and work and be sure not to progress to fast, be sure to set up the dog for sucuess :)

Try attaching his leash to a flat nylon collar and letting him drag it around the house followed with plenty of treats and praise!

Then, once he is comfortable, hold it but do not try and guide him, just hold it and let him walk around with it loose.

Once there, try and lure him to your side with treats and remember to praise praise and praise some more!

Hi fuzz... this dog was adopted by you? Who told you it was better being put down? What have you been working on for 8 months, if he's still terrified of a leash? Whose kids are he getting along with suprisingly well? There's a lot to consider here. Please get the assistance of a proffessional.
