I don't want to hear the reasoning behind banning the pit bulls and mixes.... I know and fully understand the ignorance.. but this is my rant, so let me.

Buddy now has to go to a boarding kennel while my husband and I take our trip. It's a short trip, 4 days, and our petsitter bailed on us. So, frantically I'm calling around to pet sitting agencies, boarding kennels, etc.. We call Petsmart and their doggie hotel is great. So, I thought, why not? We go to see the facilities and to be honest, they looked awesome. The dogs have their own "rooms" either an atrium or a suite and you pick packages as to what you want your dog doing all day, etc..

Well, I wanted Buddy to have doggie day camp, which is 7 hours of play time. BUT, pit bulls and pit mixes are banned from doggie day camp. It really upset me, but there's not much I can do about it. Rules are rules. Instead, he'll get one on one play time 4 times a day, which is better than nothing.

The overnight petsitters that we called, would only stay from 7p-7a, or 9p-9a, which would leave Buddy in his crate ALL day, even if I "ordered" a drop in service, which would only last 45 minutes. Although we are getting that drop in service for our cat and our rats. :) Can't forget those guys.

It's a bummer, but it really is for the safety of all the dogs concerned (Buddy included :) ) You won't be there, he'll be with strangers who don't understand him as well as you do and might miss signs that he has "issues" with another dog. Better safe than sorry, and the one on one playtime sounds great anyway!

Have fun on your trip :)

Keep in mind it may not be them. It could be their insurance compan refusing to cover them if they allow pits

I understand it's for the safety- but how unfair for Buddy. Anyways, the play sessions are 15 minutes each, one on one. AND THEN, our petsitter calls and says shes available.... oi.

Why cant you leave him free roaming in the house and just have petwalker come in twice a day give him an hour walk and and feed him?

This is where you lie. Why would you tell them he's a pitt-mix? It's not like they can prove it...I would never reveal makenzie's blood to any "care" agency.

Because it's obvious in his face that he has pit in him and we can't leave him alone.. he's a 6 month puppy.

pitts' faces look like every other mastiff's face...and any variety of "mix breeds" can carry physical characterisitcs.

If you'd like I can check around with some buddies I have in the area and see if anyone could watch him. Where exactly are you and what days will you be gone?

Thank you makenzie, but we did find someone. I really do appreciate that offer, I can't say how much that offer rocked.

Buddy's face is very much a pit face, and, that's okay. I love him regardless. So, now he gets to stay home and not have to worry about being in a boarding facility, he'll just be crated when our sitter is at work.

It really was just upsetting; you hear so much about pit bulls that, pit bulls this, pit bulls are horrible, blah, blah, blah, and they are slowly being banned from parks and other public places and states are trying to ban them, etc.. People are so ignorant, it drives me nuts.

Well you can't blame the organizations for banning them...businesses have to take the Idiot Clause into consideration at all times. The business that don't get litigated.

Petsmart has outright banned pit bulls/pit mixes from even ENTERING into the stores in Canada. I try very hard to not go to Petsmart for anything other than nail trimmings, and I am still shopping around for a local groomer that is cheaper than $20. Once i find a groomer in that price range, we will not be setting FOOT in Petsmart for as long as Petsmart continues to ban pits in Canada or elsewhere.

It's about insurance, really. If you read just about any insurance companies "dog clause" pit bulls/mixes are at the top of the list of what makes their rates jack up, and/or why they won't carry you. Mojo for all intents and purposes is labeled as a dachshund/terrier mix... I hate being dishonest, but I wouldn't find a place to live otherwise.

thats too bad. our doggie daycare allows pits and they've not had a problem.
the important thing is the caretakers are knowledable in the breed and how to break a fight if it starts.

Which, btw, has never happened in the entire duration of the daycare with a pit.

The small yippie dogs are the biters there.
