The "real" pitbull "look" is a slender, longer, muscle/no fat, game dog appearance.

The "look" per say is almost gone, as is the original purpose of pitbulls.

It is peoples preferential preference anymore. I personally do not like the "real" look of a pitbull, the look like they are gonna blow away in a breeze. I however like the short, stocky, meaty size pitbull. But that is my preference.

It seems to be a supply and demand basis for this type of pitbull. Who uses their dog for "game" purposes anymore where they'd need a body and temperment like that??Im sure many do, but shouldnt, and it is a shame.

To each his own! But I understand where you are coming from, even thoug I could not access your link.

Game-dog has alot of game examples there.

I prefer small pit bulls (under 50lbs either sex) to the large dogs that you see representing the breed now. Thanks for the links.

If it is not a true representation of the breed standard (size and weight wise) is it still a pit bull? Dont get me wrong, I like the way that the big dogs look, but I dont think that they are true pit-bulls.

why on earth is it a shame to think that an athletic, drivey breed should remain an athletic, drivey breed? you don't have to fight a dog to use and appreciate what this breed was meant to be- any kind of dog sport can put that to good use.

i think it's a real detriment to *all* breeds that we've become so focused on the way they look that everything else is secondary.

I like a medium pit. I hate the huge pits that are 10lbs plus. The small ones are better, but I prefer one in between

I have a mix... at his right weight he's 42lbs. His head isn't incredibly blocky, his legs are pretty short, and his back is pretty long... but his being so slender and small is probably why i have the preference for the smaller dogs. For instance I love the colby lines although I doubt I will ever be able to own one... (btw has anyone noticed that the colby website is down?)

so you dont like the original look of the breed, you dont like the original temperament and drive of the breed
so why do you own and breed?

I think the larger pits are disgusting looking. It is sad that people and breeders are so focused on size. Bigger is not always better.

I personally like the original pit bull. 40 to 60 pounds is perfect. Anything over 70 pounds for a male or female looks horrible in my opinion. They look so fat and slow. Too chunky. Pits are supposed to be athletic and sleek.

The forum that was posted... http://www.game-dog.com/ is great. They tell you what the different bloodlines are. What lines are garbage and what lines are amazing.

I found that the pits who are realy big and heavy are not even pure bred. They are part mastiff. The ever so popular BLUE pit bulls are not pure either.

I'm not thrilled by the blue lines. I don't know A LOT about the blood lines but the blues I've seen have NOT looked well-proportioned, which I thought the breed was supposed to be ... well-proportioned for proper execution of their jobs. Super huge heads, and bowed out legs do not fit my idea of well proportioned...

Exactly. Blue pit bulls are usually bred for color and size, thats it. Not good at all.

just trying to further conversation:

Is it right to change the original breed standard to make pit bulls more "pet" bulls? I mean, there are not many breeds that still have the same strength of drives that they had many years ago. How often do you still see dalmations running along carriges to guard them?

Dont get me wrong, I still prefer the original pit bull, and I think that MAYBE the "bigger better" pits should be a new breed.

They should seperate the bigger pits from real pit bulls. In no way should they be called pit bulls. They should be called American Mastiff Bulldog or something....

I dont think the newer pits should even be bred at all though.

well, there is a market for them, though. I agree that if they are to be bred, they do need some different name. I love pit bulls. (I dont have one, I am not ready for one yet. Maybe after I get some more dog experince under my belt) I like the breed as it was meant to be, not as it is turning into. BUT, there is a morket for the big dogs, and there will continue to be, your opinion and mine aside. I just think that there DOES need to be some sort of distenction (i know it is wrong spelling) between the two.

i disagree. there are blue dogs out there who are purebreds, and there are some who are good looking. they're few and far between, but blue does occur naturally in the breed.

Well, of course, there are natural blues... but the breeders who only breed for the "rare" blue color (how can it be rare if it's a natural color?!) don't seem to pay much attention to the other genetics involved.

I am not fond of the dogs coming out of Pitfall Kennels or the newer kennels that follow the Pitfall love of the "rare" blue pits. The dogs are too wide in their shoulders, I can't even IMAGINE how some of the dogs on their front page could have the proper movement or speed to do what the dog was originally originally meant to do (throw down a bull fir the butchers).

But that is merely my opinion. I love the smaller dogs that follow the "original" breed standard.
