Hey all,

Well I took Pippa to the vet today for her first injection, all went without a hitch, the vet said she was the picture of good health although she did find a small hernia that she said they would be able to sort out when they neuter her at 6 months. So, all in all, it went well, I did almost collapse when she told me about the hernia but was relieved when she explained it wouldn't cause Pippa any problems. More good news is that she gets her 2nd injection in 2 weeks which means in 3 weeks she will be able to go for walkies....how exciting is that!

Take care all,

Thats great news :) How old is Pippa now? Did she get the 6, 9 and 12 week vaccination or 9, 12 and 16 week? My pup got the 6, 9 and 12. She's out and about now having fun. Anyway, goodluck. Glad she went well :)

My pup got 8, 12 and 14, and they said he wouldn't be totally immunized without a fourth at 16 weeks. And at the same time, I don't remember Boris getting one at 16 weeks. So... go figure.

I would ask your vet about it.

Hello all,

Well the vet told me that she only needs two innoculations, one at 8 weeks, which she had yesterday and one at 10 weeks. I appreciate everyone's concern but I have nothing but the utmost confidence in my vet who I have known for years through her treating my cat. I assume that vaccination times are different over here in the UK than in the US, also it isnt too suprising when you consider that puppies who are going to be Guide Dogs for the Blind are vaccinated completely by the time they are 6 weeks and are out and about by 7 weeks old! It did suprise me as well when my vet said she has her last injection at 10 weeks but, like I said, she must know what she is doing!

Thanks and take care!

Wow. thats odd. Hre the last is either 12 weeks or 16 weeks. Maybe its just different in different country's. Also, i dont thnk a guide dog can be fully imunised(sp?) by 7 weeks. Their imune system just starts working then.

Well from what Manchesters posted when I asked about it, it's because the mom immunization sometimes doesn't fade until 16 weeks, so basically any shot they would get before that would be useless?

This link explains it a bit better. This one gives more info too.

I know that personally I went with the vet's opinion and didn't want to take the risk.

Thought you might be interested in reading the bit about vaccinations for guide dogs for the blind here:

http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/index.php?id=1606

"The puppies are vaccinated and ready to meet their puppy walkers at six to eight weeks old"

Although they are not completely finished at 6 weeks as I first thought they do begin socialisation out and about at this time.

Yeah, I know, but they don't really have the choice because those dogs HAVE to be socialized very young. Honestly, I wonder how many they lose because they get sick :(
