Ever heard of them?
Ever had them?

They're a Polish recipe and there is a very strong Polish background where I live, so I've grown up having them every year at fairs and carnivals, etc. and never really realized that most people don't know what they are until recently with meeting people from all over at college (wow, long sentence).

The first time I went out to Minnesota, Ryan and I made pierogis and halpuki from scratch for his family. I've made them a few other times from scratch (talk about all day in the kitchen!) and I get begged to make them all the time.

Anyway, I was just interested in who had and had not heard of them/had them.

Here's a picture :p

And a recipe (the one I use):
Polish Pierogi Recipe: Homemade Pierogis - Great for Freezing

Those look very nice Pdub! Kevin would be drooling if I dragged him in here to see, LOL

I've had them, they aren't among my list of favorites because they are bland..........NOW, that said, it could very well be that I just had BAD ones, LOL. The person who made them for me to try is not renowned for her cooking skills  :rofl1: And after the ONE TIME trying them I sort of pass anytime they are around. I guess first impressions COUNT! LOL

Kevin loves them though :)

eta: my ex hubby's family has polish ties, they used to hand make them also, especially for Christmas Eve dinner. They were soooooo yummy.

I love them! We hardly ever have them (maybe twice a year), so I always enjoy them a lot when we do. :)

I just buy the Cheemo frozen perogies and eat them all year round at my convenience!

Love perogies... but you can put the sour kraut away, hate it!

How were the one's you had prepared? Here you find a lot of fried pierogis, which I think taste bland. I just boil mine and slather them in butter and cooked onions. I also use farmer's cheese and potatoes, though you can put stuff like sauerkraut or hamburger in them too.
They also have dessert pierogis, which I LOVE, but haven't tried making yet.

I don't think they're that bland, but then again I grew up on them, we even get them in school lunches!

I'll admit, I'm a pierogi snob, don't try feeding me any of those Mrs. T's :lol-sign:

When I finally break down and make them I usually make a TON and freeze them for whenever.

These were fried........in butter I am pretty sure. Don't remember onions or garlic though, that might have helped a little :p

I love sauerkraut, and nearly any kind of cheese.........I might have to give them a second chance, LOL The ones I tried weren't "spit them out of your mouth" bad.......they were just Blah and I don't like Blah, LOL

Since my mom is ukranian we eat perogies on a very regular basis (and actually I think a lot of families around here eat them regularly, they are very common in our grocery stores). I love all kinds, but a yummy treat are the fruit filled ones!

We make them from scratch every year on Christmas eve with my paternal grandparents :D We do Sauerkraut, Potato, Prune, Cheese, and Apple Sauce fillings! Everyone has a favorite. The first time we make them (Xmas eve) We just boil them and keep them warm until dinner but the second time we saute them with onions and butter :) And we always eat them with Sour Cream.

The "taste of Russia" booth at our local farmer's market has the bestest perogies ever! Here they tend to get spelt perogy. You can buy them at all the grocery stores, actually I bought some today lol.

I LOVE them... and I dont mind the frozen ones... for a quick dinner I will boil them, then saute in a pan onions, garlic, broccoli and add the pierogis until they are slightly browned.

I like mine fried with either sour cream or applesauce. Yes you read it right, I scoop applesauce with them and eat them.

Chedder/potato ones are my favorite

That's EXACTLY how I prepare them as well, minus the broccoli (though I may try that). We serve them with a small dollop of sour cream.

I can't say that I've had pierogies before, but they look an awful lot like potstickers/gyoza/lumpia. I know there's a different filling to them though. I'll have to try making them sometime!

Right now I've got a recipe for lumpia that I'm dying to try, but it makes like 18 dozen at a time :p
