This is Zorro, I thought I would share some photos of him, it is hard even now to talk about Zorro, he was my baby, and to this day I miss him horribly!!! Zorro came to me by way of Lynn who posts on here as well, and I am forever grateful for the time I shared with this dog. He is such a huge part of where I went with terriers and who I am now, and that is no exaggeration.

Zorro, sadly as lost as a result of the very thing that makes JRTs so special, Prey drive... We went for a walk here on the farm as we often did, Zorro was running a bit ahead of the group and took off into a hollowed out log on the ground ( much like the one he is pictured in, but with only one entrance and not hollowed all the way out ) well, inside the log was a skunk and Zorro was sprayed in close tight quarters with no way to get air, I was there within a minute though it felt like hours and my Baby died in my arms as I ran for help....

Anyhow, It still hurts to this day, but his story is one I share with those I get to know because it is a part of me and who I am today and also illustrates just how driven these guys can be and how fast they can get into trouble...

Some of these pics are mine, some Lynns, and some others, many are tiny because I had a bad crash a few years and lost many but for thumbnails I had on websites and I have not had time to scan the orginals

Zorro at 3 weeks

Zorro and Bobby at about 10 or 12 weeks??

Zorro at about same age...

Laura, those are still some of my fav pic's. What a horrible day that was, still can't believe that he was taken so soon.
Not only did he kick butt in any event you entered him in, his kids and grandkids have continued to do the same across N.A.

What a great looking little guy, and shocking story! Skunk spray is poisonous? I thought it just smelled bad. I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Dana,
Yes skunk spray is very toxic, especially to a dog in the earth or in this case a closed in area. If the dog takes a direct hit as Zorro did, not much can be done. If they don't take a direct hit and you can get to them quickly, you have to treat them asap. Most vets are also very ignorant of how to treat them and worse they are very dismissive of how serious and fatal it can be.
Dogs have to be treated like a cat that has ingested Tylenol. The spray causes the red blood cells to explode and causes long term Anemia and that is if the dog has gotten out of the earth quickly, if not it can be fatal. Dogs sprayed in the open are not at risk.
The dogs also often end up with Kidney failure and die before they are 10 yrs old.
Many years ago, I was speaking to my vet about it, he laughed at me and told me what I was saying was absolutey foolish, ignorant and wrong.
Needless to say I was very pissed, I came home and called a fellow Jrt breeder and friend in the States, who just happens to be a Vet (actually both he and his wife are Vets). Doug had also written an article on the effects and treatment of skunking. He happily sent me a copy, at which time I copied it and then dropped it off at my vet's office.
I have to give the vet credit, he called me later and apologized.
