staffordshire is the real name for a pit. We use it at the rescue b/c once someone hears pit they freak. If we say staffordshire terrier they at least take a few minutes and sometimes change a few misconceptions about the breed.

Yes, a Staff and an American Pit Bull are different breeds.

She is absolutely a gorgeous girl! I love her pink collar!

Just to let you know she's a Pedigree Stafforshire bull terrier. We dont have what you guys call pit bulls over here in the UK. Just Staffies and English Bull terriers. But as far as I knew staffies and pitbulls all originate from the same breed. I found this answer on the net and this is what I was lead to believe as true.

My Vet said the APBT and American Staffordshire Terrier are the same thing. Are they?

Well, yes and no. How's that for straightforward? As stated in the introduction, there are several different "breeds" of dogs that are refered to as "Pit Bulls" by the general public. Primarily, these are the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. There are two general schools of thought pertaining to this issue. The first is that these dogs come from the same English/Irish pit fighting stock of over 100 years ago but have been subsequently bred to differing standards and are now different breeds. The second is that these dogs are just different "strains" (working vs. show) of the same breed. It all really comes down to how one defines what constitutes a breed. In general, however, ASTs have lost most of the gameness of their pit fighting ancestors, while at least some well-bred lines of APBTs have maintained this quality unaltered. Dogs of both breeds, if well-bred, have similar human- friendly dispositions

no a staffordshire bull terrier is different from a pit, over in the uk we call them staff for short but they are different, pits are banned in the uk.

What I orginally stated below I take all back, I didn't know pitbulls were banned in the uk. I have now done my research and after searching (for quite a long time, the info wasn't easy to find) I discovered 4 dogs are banned in the UK. I had no idea. The act was brought in, in 1991 I was only 8 at the time, I really dont remeber anything about it.

Here is a link which takes you to the goverment leaflet on this subject.

I cant believe I was ignorant of this.

    ORIGINAL POST.

If we call pit bulls "staffs" for short how can they be banned? I own a staff. I have never heard of pit bulls being banned in the UK? They were just never a registered breed over here. They are only a registered breed in america.
