Okay so the dogs have been on raw since July 31 of 2008. I am switching them for the summer, to deal with ants and flys and the smell of old chicken in my garage. (HOA prevents me from keeping my garbage cans elsewhere, in the winter it is no big deal but the summer it makes my house smell.)

I was looking through wellness, and innova. The problem is that I am living on my own and trying to make ends meet. For this reason, I decided to go with kirkland. I know I can buy better, but with them being on raw for so long, and still going to be getting fish oil pills for their coat, I think we should be okay.

Here is the review. Anyone else feed kirkland from costco? Its only 20.00 a 40 pound bag as opposed to 60 for a 33 pound bag of wellness or innova.

I fed Kirkland for over a year (also trying to make ends meet ;) ) and my dogs did pretty well on it. I like how Sawyer does on Innova better, but when I was feeding two dogs, I had to do what I had to do.

FYI, Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice is the exact same thing, for pretty much the exact same price if you don't already have a Costco membership.

I feed Kirkland Chicken and Rice. Mini eats it dry (along with whatever else she successfully steals or forages) and looks terrific; slick, shiny coat, nice skin, and way more energy than I think is appropriate.

Uncle Fred gets his with added fat and a raw egg mixed in, along with whatever raw I can get a really good deal on. He is also doing very well, and has graduallty stopped showing symptoms of his IBD, even after dietary indiscretions.

overall I have been quite happy with this food. And it way better than anything else I could possible afford to but for them.

Just wondering what does ants of flies have to do with feeding raw? If the dogs eat all their food how do the ants get it?

Never fed it (No costco here) But I have heard very good things about it... let us know how it works out.

Just remember you can always add things to the food... Armani gets kibble but I am always adding something, eggs, salmon, sardines, chicken, beef, flounder, sweet potato, green beans, broccoli, etc... NOT necessary but if you feel they are missing anything it is an option.

Yeah I have one and my mom does too and she said she'd pick up a bag for me :)

Oh awesome. I'll mix a raw egg in with it too, they like those. Thanks! Im super excited now! Chance is a lot of dog so I needed a cheap food!

The ziplock bags that I keep them in in the freezer. Even after rinsing the bags, and sealing them back up, the ants and flies smell them. It gets to be 120 degrees here in the summer, so I basically have to wash everything before it goes in the trash can or it will stink to high heaven

This might sound odd, but if you find a good odor proof diaper pail that might solve your problem with insects. We lived in Tucson while doing cloth diapers for Aurelia, and I feel your pain about the smell/bugs during the summers! Getting a good stink proof/bug proof diaper pail really worked well for eliminating the smell, and the bugs couldn't get in.

And because diatomaceous earth fixes everything, you can always sprinkle some in your garbage can and it will totally destroy any ants/maggots/flies/cockroaches getting into your garbage, buahahaha!

That being said, Kirkland is a nice food. Charlie is mainly on Chicken and Rice Kirkland as we ease him into raw, and on tight months we cut Strider's TOTW with it to make his food go farther, and he still always looks great on it.

I have been using it for about 2 years now. no complaints. Blaze has a sensitive stomache as it is. I have tried him on grain free and other brands, but he always ends up witht he runs (and yes I do the gradual switch and I try it for about 2 or 3 months with no hope). But it never fails, he gets the runs if he gets to excitied over anything and everything lol. Bu totherwise he does wonderful on it, thick shiny coat, no dandruff, teeth are pearly white for a 6 year old dog (although he does also get raw bones a few times a week) no bad breath, no farts ect. Im happy with it

Oh thats a smart idea. Its also the fact that organs are hard to find too so until I can find a good source I will keep them on kibble. Plus I have 2 roommates and I think its less gross to have kibble in the house lol

Thanks for the input! I am going to keep them on RMB's too because Baileys teeth are already starting to show some tarter build up :(

At home my Mom uses a squirt bottle of ammonia left under the kitchen sink for all ziplock type bags that have had meat in them.. dog or human. Has done it for years and keeps the smell down and keeps the mice out of our trash even when left in accessible places.

I also like Dekka's idea for organs at her house. She uses containers from the dollar store and has her ground organs, egg, kelp, etc in them. When empty, wash them out, store them away until her next raw order.

Doesn't help you find a source.. btu a combo of containers and ammonia in your used bags should make your bug issue far less of an issue.
