I saw a TV ad for this earlier today, and just got my PetPerks email about it, too.

Natural Dog Food and Organic Dog Food | PetSmart

It's still not fantastic and they still carry a lot of crappy brands, but it's refreshing to see them stepping in the right direction. Most of these foods have way better ingredients than the standard corn-heavy foods.

People listen to big name box stores. :)

Twice now I've seen a long-ish Blue Buffalo commercial. It starts out by saying things like "I never knew how many bad things were in my dog food" basically the same way most Purina/Iams commercials start so I thought it was just another scam commercial. But I was pleasantly suprised to see it was Blue!

Definitely a step in the right direction. :)

Hah yeah, I saw that ad for the first time the other day too. I was pleasantly surprised.

I can't find the article right now, but I read an article earlier that said Petsmart is looking into adding more natural and grain-free foods and phasing out other lower-quality brands as time goes on.

I'm actually glad Petsmart is doing this slowly. It means that more people will be open to trying new products, I bet.

Definitely. If all of a sudden people walked into Petsmart and their Iams and Eukanuba was gone... they would riot. Doing it slowly will make it less "shocking," and hopefully people will be willing to try out different brands.

They also educated the employees about food quality, or at least the ones who weren't sure. They also gave reading material for those wanting to read more... And they're wearing "ask me about our best foods" pins, to coincide with the commercials... They're really trying to push the better foods nowadays.

Sweet! Yeah, I assumed they would have the employees suggesting the new, better foods.

Tell me about it, but we are happy with Kirkland now so it doesnt matter LOL.

But it would benice for a good brand to be easily obtainable and possibly they would have some price cuts (hey a girl can wish) since they will have a bigger customer base.

I went into petsmart and it made me think of this thread, I was browsing the dog food section and overheard an employee giving advice to a customer..

he was saying that the management gave them all new information on GOOD foods (no corn, by-products etc..) and are actually informing their employees on good dog nutrition

its very nice to see :) and totally a step in the right direction!

Oh yes, with 4 dogs who eat like 8-9ish cups a day, most of the really good brands are way to expensive. We just don't have $200+ to spend on dog food each month. But I like what we're on now, but that doesn't mean if they came down in price we wouldn't change. :)

This is very good, but i hope Champion at least decides to stay out of big box large chain stores. If petsmart got their hands on Orijen, all hope would be lost for small stores like mine :(

I had to go to a mandatory 2 hour meeting about this last week! (I work at a Petsmart Pet Hotel)

It was ironic, because I work in the hotel and RARELY give food advice, but I knew the answers to every question and the in-store employees were clueless. I'm so glad they're learning about premium foods and not just pushing the ol' Science Diet. I wish this would mean that the hotel offered a premium in-house food, but SD does it for free because all of their funds go into promotions, so I doubt it. :/

The only food that I would feed (but don't) is Blue Wilderness, though... hopefully Petsmart gets more grain-free foods. I've heard talk about a Martha Stewart line. Exciting! I love Martha.

sad to say but i dont think petsmart will ever phase out the low quality food, i think that is a money maker for them, again really sad! the only food they currently carry that i would give to my pooches is the blue, but the only problem with the blue is that my rotties will not eat the life bit kibbles, that is where all the vitamins are in the food.

For those who have issues with the higher price for good quality, have a peek at the new re-done Authority brand (black and green with a picture of a dog on the left side).
I read the ingredients and there was lots of meats and no corn at all. And it was basically the same price as the purina and cheaper stuff ($13 for a medium bag?)
