Is it just me or does it annoy anyone else when people are driving with dogs in their laps?

I'm talking about when they have them in the driver side with them.

I just think this is way too dangerous.

Your thoughts?

Yeah that frustrates me. My dogs sit in the passenger seat next to me, but they just hang out there and have never been a nuisance or tried to climb over.

Yah it slightly bothers me. Teagan is usually buckled down in the back seat, or if were going on a longer trip she is put in her kennel. And her kennel is bungee corded down.

That drives me nuts. It's so dangerous, not only for their poor dog who might get squished between them and the steering wheel, but it's dangerous for other drivers. They ban using cell phones but not this???? Go figure...

My dog Princess rides shotgun. She is happiest there. Next to me with the wind blowing into her face. She loves the car.

It bothers me.

Even if the dogs are just sitting in the passenger seat, unhooked... A car traveling at 30 mph can result in a 60-pound dog crashing into the windshield, seat, or another passenger with an impact of 2,700 pounds. Unrestrained dogs in general are dangerous.

A good friend of mine lost a very nice Chessie after slamming on the brakes at 30 mph. The dog hit the dash on the passenger side and was dead when it hit the floor. They tried for a half hour to bring her back.

I see a lot of stupid stuff happen around here. Toy dogs tucked in the shirts of people on motorcycles, dogs loose in the back of pickups and 4 wheelers, dogs being encouraged to chase the vehicle their owners are in, chasing dogs on dirtbikes. It's all stupid... wreckless and fun and games til someone kills their pet.

There is risk inherent in getting out of bed in the morning but with something as simple as a cross tie, a crate, or a quality belt restraint along with some frakking common sense negating 98% of any issue I don't have a ton of patience for it anymore.

I just about killed Pit when he was just a puppy that very same way when I got in a car accident. Thankfully I was going slow enough not to harm him apparently, but I haven't let a dog anywhere near my front seat since then. Anyone that doesn't lie down and stay put way in the back gets seat belted.

I think dogs in pickup trucks scares me the most. ESPECIALLY the ones that pace and prop their front feet up on the edges as the truck is moving. I slow down and change lanes to get as far away from those guys as possible - I don't want to be the one to hit the dog when it falls out of the bed.

I saw the best kind of idiot the other day.

A guy riding on a moped on the highway, then I noticed the tiny puppy that was sitting in between his feet. :( It looked like it was scared and wanted off, as in it looked like it was very interested in jumping off of the moving moped. Probably a 5lb pup, I just got a glance of it but it looked like either a jrt or a toy fox terrier pup. Fusking IDIOT!!!!!!!! I still can't get over that....

Yes, people driving with their dogs on their lap, loose, in the back of a truck, with the window way down, or whatever else dumb they can find to do makes me cringe.

I will say that one of the funniest things I've ever seen driving down the road was following a pickup and seeing a guy and large dog riding in the passenger seat in the rig in front of me.

Well as we drove down the road in the same direction I see the back of the dog inch closer.... and closer... and closer to the driver. I then see the silhouette of what must be some kind labrador giraffe hybrid insert it's tongue into the driver's ear. The truck in front of me swerves and the guy shoves his dog back to the passenger seat. I then see the dog begin to inch his way back towards the driver....

Here's an artist's rendering of the event. LOL

Gavroche does ride shotgun but he is buckled in and the passenger airbag is off. Logan generally rides in the backseat. If it's open window weather (which is rare...usually I need the ac or the heater) I have guards for the windows, even though my dogs are in a down-stay and buckled in, just in case. I also have a hammock seat cover for the back seat so in the event Logan's seatbelt fails he doesn't end up on the floor or through the windshield.

Or jumps out. My cousin's dog jumped out of the back of his pickup when we were four wheeling one day. And my parents dog snapped her tie down and leaped out of the back of the Jeep one time. She came pretty close to dying.

I buckle my dogs in but occasionally I will let one of them ride loose. Usually it's when Mu gets pissy about Tips invading her personal space in the back seat. I try not to do it though because it really freaks me out. I need a bigger car so I can separate them better. :(
