I didn't see anything about this in the forums, but my girlfriend said that petco no longer offers their training classes to large breeds, even if they are still a puppy.

It seems like more and more, people are discriminating against large breeds, because of people who train them to be aggressive.

This is ridiculous, each dog should be taken in to the classes based on the dogs personality and temper, not based on it's size or breed. Especially if it's a puppy. I can understand that maybe their insurance rates are going up because of more employees being bit by larger dogs, but that shouldn't effect a puppy.. even a mastiff puppy can only do so much damage to a person, lol.

I'm finding more and more that people just don't want to deal with big dogs. My poor bull/neo mastiff gets turned down from alot of vets, pet stores, training programs. It's just really sad to see that people are seeming trying to phase out large breeds.

At least that's what it seems like in Southern California where I live.

I haven't heard anything about this either

Although I doubt it would shock me overly much if it is true. We don't have major issues here where we live with discrimination over larger breeds.........but I can imagine it heading in that direction slowly and surely :(

I was talking to a trainer at my local Petco and they have no breed discriminations. We were actually discussing the niceties of PitBulls! :)

^^^ Dumb rule, especially since the folks who would enroll their pup in a Petco training class are hardly likely to want to train their dogs to be aggressive.

Doesn't sound like it's every Petco, based on responses. But bad move in any area, since obviously it's just another one of those "rules" that's only ever going to affect law-abiding people.

I guess it's just the Petco by my house that banned big dogs. Last time we brought him into the store with us to get some food, they told us not to bring him with us anymore. At the same time, they are petting peoples pommies and commenting on how addorable someone else's dog is. Maybe it's just the employee's at that one or something.

I would take it up with the corporate office and see what they say. That cant be right they as a company can not do that if they advertise that as long as the pet is leashed they are welcome.

Agreed, I would definitely say something.
But to be honest, it doesn't surprise in the slightest, with the current state of BSL and mandatory spay/neuter laws in your area. You all, in California, are in for some real trouble in your future with the right to even own dogs. JMO, of course.

Yeah, california laws are getting pretty scarry. If your dog bites more than one person, no matter if it's a hard bite or a soft bite, in a year, and they file complains, they can take your dog from you and put it to sleep.

But yeah, I think I am going to talk to the manager of that petco and if that doesn't resolve it, then I'll just have to go straight to the big wigs and get to the bottom of this.
