I can't find any real evidence of this but I've seen it mentioned here a couple times. There's nothing about it on PETA's site and all the enws organizations have no mention of PETA supporting or promoting a ban on pits. All I can find are "average joes" and pitbull/dog sites that are saying PETA is doing this.

Maybe an apbt owner here can shed some light on this...

I haven't seen anything on their site about it, but it only makes sense that they would support the banning of at least one type of domestic animal. After all, PETA has stated that they would like to see the eventual extinction of companion animals. "Total animal liberation", as they call it. I see BSL as one step towards their goal.

Ingrid Newkirk: Even ardent animal lovers embrace this euthanasia policy

Thursday, January 27, 2000 By INGRID NEWKIRK

Most people have no idea that at many animal shelters across the country, any "pit bull" who comes through the front door goes out the back door -- in a body bag. From San Jose to Schenectady, many shelters have enacted policies requiring the automatic destruction of the huge and ever-growing number of "pits" they encounter. This news shocks and outrages the compassionate dog-lover.

The pit bull's ancestor, the Staffordshire terrier, is a human concoction, bred in my native England, I'm ashamed to say, as a weapon. These dogs were designed specifically to fight other animals and kill them, for human sport. Hence the barrel chest, the thick hammer-like head, the strong jaws, the perseverance, and the stamina. Pits can take down a bull weighing in at over a thousand pounds, so a human being a tenth of that weight is small potatoes to them.

Pit bulls are perhaps the most abused dogs on the planet. These days, they are kept for protection by almost every drug dealer and pimp in every major city and beyond. You can drive into any depressed area and see them being used as cheap burglar alarms, wearing heavy logging chains around their necks (they easily break regular collars and harnesses), attached to a stake or metal drum or rundown doghouse without a floor and with holes in the roof. Bored juveniles "sic" them on cats, neighbors' small dogs, and even children. In the PETA office we have a file drawer chock-full of accounts of attacks in which these ill-treated dogs have torn the faces and fingers off infants and even police officers trying to serve warrants.

Today, organizing dog fights is a federal offense in this country, yet pits are still king of the ring. Humane officers and other law enforcement agents routinely break up rings in New Mexico, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Florida. They confiscate dog-fighting paraphernalia, including treadmills used to build doggie endurance and drugs used to numb pain from injuries inflicted by opponents and to "jazz up" the dogs. They find mesh bags in which kittens, rabbits, puppies, and other small prey are suspended over the dogs to encourage fighting spirit. Not uncommonly they find what's left of dogs who have lost their battles. They are not always dead. Those who argue against the euthanasia policy for pit bull dogs are naive. One dog that had just been adopted by a family suddenly clamped his jaw onto the thigh of a 7-year-old boy. Two grown men had a hard time getting the dog off and the child suffered permanent nerve damage. Tales like thisabound. I have scars on my leg and arm from my own encounter with a pit. Many are loving and will kiss on sight, but many are unpredictable. An unpredictable chihuahua is one thing, an unpredictable pit another.

People who genuinely care about dogs won't be affected by a ban on pits. They can go to the shelter and save one of the countless other breeds and lovable mutts sitting on death row through no fault of their own. We can only stop killing pits if we stop creating new ones. Legislators, please take note. By Ingrid Newkirk

Mordy , I weep for those who love them and care for them, but you have described what is going on here. I turned in a lovely sweet Pitty for a neighbor... I kept watching the HS placement and she never showed up .Another one " Lost" . I would say at this point to watch for ANY back yard breeding !! If you rescue ... Spay or neuter !! Please... leave it to the show dog breeders !!! If you are truly wanting to save these breeds, educate !! Buy a whole litter and spay and neuter the pups ! This is not my breed, but if I saw Goldens used and abused as yours are, I sure would stand up to the challenge !

Mackenzie -

What Mordy copied was also reprinted here in the San Francisco Gate newspaper

It's talked about on animal rights websites such as this one

And what's also amusing to me - which most people don't know is ... Ingrid has also said the following gems (quoted from the Animal Liberation Front's website)

"We have an abolitionist approach, but I always say that while our heads are in the clouds and we fight for total liberation, our feet are firmly planted on the ground. For example, I don't think people should ride horses (which has been too radical for even an animal rights feminist publication to print in the U.S., believe it or not), but if I see someone beating a horse I'm going to try and stop them even if I can't take their horse away from them."

She also actively supports the Animal Liberation Front (A.L.F.) which has been known to blow up research centers, set animals "free" and other acts...

I personally dispise the woman, as well as PETA.

Why is the San Fransisco Gate the only place such a thing is publicised? And who is writing that article? It has Ingrid Newkirk at the top, but it refers to Ingrid Newkirk and PETA in the third person...? It's also pretty poorly written...

Have you even GOOGLED Ingrid Newkirk pit bulls mackenzie? You get pages and pages... and it's not just pit bull websites. Yes. It was originally written by Ingrid back in 2000. Then from what i understand from a paper from LA is she resubmitted it for publication in 2005.

The PETA website is about making money, which is spent on ad campaigns/paraphanelia. Thus of course you aren't going to find Ingrid's opinions on pet ownership, pit bulls or horses. PETA does not support humane societies, or rescue organizations. PETA does not donate the money to anywhere other than ALF, or ELF... and to itself. (you can look at their tax returns online)

If you google Ingrid Newkirk you will find thousands of hits. If you don't want to wade through those hits to educate yourself on the storm that surrounds Ms Newkirk.. .then whatever. I don't like her. I think PETA is hypocritical in so many ways that it's actually becoming hilarious.

Brem - what's also funny is that they are all Pro PETA - but how many of them do you think use medical procedures and/or products that were derived from animal research? Anyone who has cancer, diabetes, asthma, heart disease, AIDS, etc... has used a procedure and/or medicine that has come from animal research. Hypocrites.

Personally? I'm all for animal welfare... not animal rights.

I know not just pit sites...you get a vast variety of hits that would get you laughed at if you tried to use them as legitimate sources.

I'm just curious why this letter never arises in connection with anything related to PETA...it's in the San Francisco Chronicle on June 8, 2005, and on thousands of ban-sites and peta/ban hate-sites. That's it.

Don't you think that if she didn't write it there would be a lawsuit for libel/slander filed someplace (and placed on the google search) by Ingrid Newkirk? If that was printed in 2005 in the San Francisco paper, I think Ms Newkirk would have heard of it by now, and would have filed a lawsuit someplace. I think the fact that she hasn't done so, probably is a point towards the validity of that written piece.

You do know that she is the co-founder/president of PETA right? A lot of her more radical views are NOT found in relation to PETA, but are found in relation to the more extremist animal rights groups. This includes advocating violence in eco/domestic-terrorism, lauding the serial killer who killed fashion designer Versace among other things. This woman has been quoted as saying that she personally believes that all pet owning should be outlawed because it's cruel.

Not if she supports it. I'm talking about PETA, though.

Let me give you an example of what I mean: I make a small business of making single-side swingarms for Suzuki's TL1000S sport motorcycle. Personally, I really dislike squids. A squid is a person who rides a motorcycle irresponsibly, without propper protection and generally sets a bad example for the world to view us all with. However, if I refused to deal with these people due to my personal convictions, I would lose a portion of my potential income.

Personal beliefs are not always reflected in business practices...and, as you said, PETA is operated as a business.

Mordy, where did you get that?
I saved it from the site where it originally came from.

Copyright notices are generally written in third person because they must containt he name of the individual claiming copyright.

If you have any questions about it, why don't you contact Ingrid, who so conveniently gave her address, or Bergen Record Corp. for clarification?

It's pretty easy to sit back and make smug replies at the facts people present to you, but not producing anything yourself, you know?

No, in the letter she refers to PETA in the 3rd person, insinuating that she's not writing the letter on behalf of PETA, but for herself alone.

It's pretty easy to sit back and make smug replies at the facts people present to you, but not producing anything yourself, you know?
I'm not making smug replies. I'm looking for proof that PETA supports breed specific banning...I can't find any myself, despite the fact that a vast number of people seem to be under the impression that PETA does support it. I have no proof to the contrary, nor am I trying to prove the contrary...and if PETA doesn't support, why would proof be available?

Uggh. Don't even get me started on PETA. I hate the idea of being lumped in with those nuts every time I mention animal welfare.

I too have heard about Ingrid's stand on Pitties, and frankly, it doesn't surprise me in the least. PETAs shelter kills more FAR more animals/year than the local shelter just miles down the road from them- most of these animals being friendly and quite adoptable.

Some idea of "liberation" isn't it?

The entire organization disgusts me.

As far as the celebrities go- I'm not surprised. What celebrity these days doesn't jump onto some kind of a cause in order to make themselves look better? Most of these celebrities are vegetarians, animal lovers, and happy pet owners- and lets face it, the *idea* behind PETA sounds good. If you do no further research than what the acronym stands for, you're going to believe that this is some wonderful organization made to prevent animal cruelty, not a business that supports the killing of entire breeds of dog, doesn't believe in pet ownership, and uses scare tactics to suck gullible people and children into their cause.
