Remember Leona Helmsley? The NY hotel baroness gal who left $12 million to her dog Trouble?

Well her estate is valued at up to $ 8 BILLION and is supposed to go to the "care and welfare of dogs."

Look who's waving 'me, me, gimme the money, we do care and welfare of dogs!'
PeTA and HSUS.

All I can say is I hope neither one gets a dime. PeTA is not an organization that does good for dogs. Between killing dogs they claim to be rehoming, advocating BSL and advocating a vegan diet for dogs, I don't see how anyone could fall for them saying they would use the money for the care and welfare of dogs. And HSUS isn't a whole lot better.

Aggh. We need to get her to donate to the McDonough County Animal Shelter. It's turning into a pile or rubble and dogs!! And we actually NEED it and LOVE pets..

Stupid PETA! Grr.

Excuse me? HSUS and PETA are political organizations, not animal welfare organizations. If the money goes anywhere, it should go to ACTUAL animal welfare organizations.

But moreover, generally a will says where the money goes AFTER the pet dies . . . if hers doesn't then her lawyer should be shot. And if it doesn't say, then as a general rule, it goes to the state.

Lilavati I'm not in the habit of arguing with lawyers LOL but my understanding is that there is $12 Mio for her dog, and then there is the $8 Bio from her estate for the 'care and welfare of dogs.' The Helmsley Foundation is overseeing the disposition of the second pot of money. I would think a plain ol' executor / executrix would be handling the first pot.
These are two separate things.
