Anyone use any of the pet insurance companies? And if you do, what do you use and how do you like it?

Thanks!

I use www.petinsurance.com it is VPI. I pay $25/month, and a $50 deductable per "event" They cover a lot of things (except for preventative meds). I like it so far. it is a little bit of a hassle as everything is out of pocket, and they re-imburse you. I would highly suggest it. I wish that I would have gotted it b4 Thor got mange, as they do not cover pre-existing conditions.

I have that insurance as well but I don't think I'll continue with it when it expires.

I've read up on pet health insurance and for me personally I wasn't too fond of the idea. I'd rather save the money that I would put in the health plan and deposit it in an account especially for the pets just in case of an emergency.

I personally would rather have my own " fund " ....with $50 deductable and not paying for Heartworm or tick/flea etc.I really don't think it's worth it. Unless your dog comes from " bad" stock...most issues don't arise until 8 to 10 years. By then you've paid in $2500 to $5000 ....

We use the one at Petsmart, only because I personally know the vet and we would see her anyways! It has saved quite a bit of money, I am not good at saving otherwise I think we would put some up like Giny had said=)

I don't have insurance, but an "emergency fund" into which I put money and also a credit card that I only use for minor purchases and keep paid off. It's a $5,000 cushion in case I ever should need it.

This way I don't actually have to pay money on a month-to-month basis for insurance that I may not even need.

I'm with you Mordy . If it's something major, I can always sell on E bay and pay off. I have 2 cards with high limits.....so my dog comes first....example : tomorrow I have to buy heartworm meds ( I'm out and Chip was due today ) .... my SS doesn't come in until the 3rd........bless my credit card ! It will be paid off , I just need the extra time line.

after paying for a whole year of VPI premiums, i felt i was giving my dog a peace of mind in case anything should happen to him. a couple months ago he wasn't able to walk after our stroll in the park and i took him to a vet.

turns out it he sprained his back. well, VPI has it pretty much figured out how they didn't have to cover any of the $200 vet bill. for a sprain, they only cover $46 and the deductible was $50. their rep kept saying that if i had upgraded to their superior plan, it would have covered a lot more. i insisted on their doing the math, and it turns out it would have paid out a whopping $20.

so, save your premiums, as it would have covered the vet bill in my case. but what i really hate is how they advertise themselves as giving petowners a peace of mind with comprehensive coverage for unexpected illnesses and accidents. it's just false advertising.

what you need to be aware of with using pet insurance is that not only are certain preconditions not covered, any condition that is not listed in their pamphlet is also not covered. since we don't know what ailments will beset our dogs, it is a gamble that the insurance will pay off, if at all.

It is a gamble, and for me by not having it has paid off. Over my many, many years of owning dogs , I was very lucky. I think the PTS and cremation may heve been my largest with all of them,,,, I wonder if insurance pays for that ? Let me know/

since death and taxes are both certainties, i'm sure insurance companies will not take that gamble. what are the odds of their making a profit?

I don't have pet insurance and don't know much about it but isn't it true that only certain vets take it and that may limit the Veternarians you could see?

VPI lets you use any vet. you pay up front, and then submit receipts for re-embursements.

The reason that I decide to get VPI is the mange mites that Thor has. I have paid out almost $2000 in dips and shots to cure it, and I think that VPI would have helped a substancial amount with that. While yeah, I may never need to use it, it would take 7 or 8 years of premiums to cover that amount. I pay 26 or 27 dollars a month for it. seems like a decent way to hedge my bets.

I think it would be a great thing to use if you need it and personally I would Rocky has a lot of health problems and in the two years we have had him he has racked up quite a vet bill well over $7,000.00
