They are even more terrier like in temperament than the smooth and longhair.Another thing I don't understand is dachshunds placed in the hound group in AKC - that's one of the worst misclassifications I've ever seen. The fact that I don't like the whole group judging thing to begin with aside, it's beyond me why you would judge a dachshund in a group with other breeds like sighthounds, fox/coon hounds etc. instead of other ground-going dogs.
Stevinski, I don't know about clubs and events in the UK, have you contacted the parent breed club or looked for a working terrier club?

That and the breeders of working dachshunds don't breed for exaggerated traits and rigorously exclude dogs from their breeding program that show any signs of being unsound.
My own dachshund, who according to my vet/breeder was not 100% but predominantly working lines (I found her abandoned at 8 weeks old, so I don't know where she came from) had an occurrence of a prolapsed disc when she was about 2 years old but was treated successfully with an injection of an anti-inflammatory and four weeks of very restricted exercise and after that never had a problem again.
I was lucky that my vet was a dachshund expert herself and knew just what to look for when examining her. She also taught me that it is critically important to keep a dachshund very lean and well exercised so there is enough good muscle mass to support the spinal column.

UKC places them in the "Scenthounds" group, which at least makes some sense since they are also frequently used for tracking and trailing.
Personally I think the Terrier group would be a better fit though.

Jackson Browne thinks he's a working Dachshund....he's always out in the back yard hunting for critters underground. He points, sniffs and starts digging. I call him "my little Badger hunting dog)!!!! I also tell him that if he were ever to come face to face with a Badger that he would probably pee himself!!LOL
