DO your dogs get eye infections? is sticking your nose snout deep in a mole hole something that makes eye infections more of a possibility? Victor has a bad one in one eye and both look a little funky. It started with a sty that burst and now his inner eyelid is pulled half way across and his eye is goopy. I have him on amoxicillin and antibiotic eye drops. Warm compresses every 4 hours.

I haven't been doing that and i will. I do when the grass seeds are falling so it is something he is use to. If he didn't try to smash his whole face in there it would help. Pepper's eyelids are much tighter around then his are. He looks awful. He needs pirate patch. I have tried flushing them many times in the last 24 hours but his inner eyelid is so swollen it is hard to get around it and because it hurts he is fighting me which is unlike him. I hate to change their number one most favorite morning activity. Wish he would go back to being happy with just running and flushing birds. Pepper changed alot of things around here.

:rofl1::rofl1::rofl1: my dogs bored. THat's a hoot. YOu just don't know my gang but thanks for the advice. These guys get a hard run every morning and training in the afternoon. THe rest of the time they sleep so they can have the energy to go again.

To expand on flushing the eyes with water, we use sterile water or a half/half solution of saline and sterile water. We flush the eyes out because of the dirt and grit that gets into the eyes when earthworking and how bad it is often depends on the soil conditions.
I have never had a dog get an infection however and we check the eyes in the working field after the dog has worked and again that night and the next day to ensure all the grit/dirt has been flushed out.

Good that is pretty much what we do...since digging seems to be an everyday delight for now. I will be grateful when the ground freezes and we can get back to just running. I have been using a bottle of bausch and Lomb advanced eye relief eye wash that i picked up for Mary's allergy eyes a few months ago. I flush hers twice a day now and we haven't had anymore allergy problems. Those steroid eye drops from the vet are pricey. I thought if i tried just flushing her eyes like this maybe we could rinse out what was bothering her and it might prevent it. So far so good. Now i do two dogs instead of one. Pepper seems to have no problems with it. SHe is however got the cleanest teeth i have ever seen on a dog. Grass floss is fabulous but today she bit into the dirt and got a big mouthful stuck to the roof of her mouth. I was laughing at her. Is there anything else i should know? This is all new to me but they are both muscling up from it and are worn out slick after a couple hours so it seems to be a grand workout so if it does no more harm i will let them at it.

I will have vids tonight. I am so excited to share. If nothing else this mole digging thing has giving Mary great interest and humour. Her fasication with treats from the ground has added a whole new aspect to our morning ritual. THat is what i want..life to be fun and interesting to her as long as possible. She even gave that old dirt a few digs today and wears her dirty brown nose with pride.
I love that Pepper and Victor have learned to use each other's talent. SHe watches him like a hawk as he races and stops on a dime..he starts to dig and she flys there and he backs off moves to the other side and begins but i notice that he counts on her to do the deepest of the digging. They are deffinatly a team. WHen you trial compete...what do you call it? Ground work with dogs do you let them go two at a time? I should try to look some of this stuff on utube.

thats how ruby and jasper do it too, ruby does the heavy dig then jsaper goes in for the finate delicate work...

Don't know if i ever will get my vids on here. I drove to shawnee to see a friend today so she could put it on a disc for me because my computer has something wrong and shuts down when i put the thumb drive in. 30 minute drive each way and get home...and the disc doesn't work. I will try my brother tomorrow and if that doesn't work i will give up.

When I had my Lab Joe, he got them quite a bit when he was younger and digging constantly. I had a bottle of saline and washed his eyes out everytime I saw him digging, and it helped, but he still got a lot of them. His rheumatoid arthritis put an end to his digging. I guess even a crippling disease has a benefit.
Right now, King and Molly both are just getting over eye infections. King's came up suddenly. I noticed nothing when I looked at him before I went to bed, and 8 hours later, his left eye was glued shut. I took them both to the vet, since they had shots due anyway. Her eyes got all snotty the next morning, of course. The vet did exactly what I expected, put the green stuff in his eyes to check for scratches, etc, and then, because he's getting close to 11, checked his eye pressure, which was great. My wallet spasmed, as usual. Just when I got the vet paid off, of course.
