Walking home from the pub after work with my sister and her friends, and see a man lying in the street.

So I stop to help him, he's so lovely - Sam, he's 39...

Not sure if he fell, or was hit by a car or what... So called an ambulance and sent my pissed sister home, and sat there on my own in the ****ing pissing rain (rain like I have never seen before, like torrential) and waited with him till the ambulance came.

Just chatted to him, wanted to make sure he was talking the whole time....

I can't believe it started to rain - sods law... So I just tried to make sure it stayed out of his face...

Anyway, the ambulance turns up - they don't ask me ONE single question, nothing, just leave me standing there, so in the end I asked - what should I do?

"Oh, if you're not with him you can go home"

That's it. The end.

And you know how many cars drove past while I was there, alone, in the rain with a man on the floor - at least 5.

You know how many stopped? None.

So far I have called an ambulance for an old fella, seen a mugging, sat with an old lady in a bus station for about an hour in the middle of the night, and now this. And I am always amazed at how people IGNORE what is in front of them - noone stops for people in need...... WTF is that about?? Just stroll on by....

Meh.

The only thing I want to know is how I can find out if this fella is OK.. I know he lives here.. I suppose I'll just have to look out for him at some point :(

That is horrible... I dislike most people as well. I hope that man is okay :( It's really great that you were there to help him.

Kudos to you! :hail: :hail:

There was a show on last night (forgot which one) and they had actors doing different things (boyfriend screaming and being abusive towards girlfriends, vice versa, falling over drunk and then getting in a car to drive, etc.) to see how many people would stop....hardly anybody did! I was shocked!

At school I will occasionally see students drop all of their books, etc. in the hallway and usually not one single person will stop! They will step around them and keep on moving, and I think, these are the people who are not going to be helping with the above mentioned stuff in the future. It upsets me how people can just do nothing. :(

Well done to you! You did the right thing, and I'm sure that man is grateful for it.

If only more people were like you, well done :)

It doesn't matter what others do; only what YOU do. You did good and the world is better for it.
I completely agree. It's very sad no one else did anything, but I'm so glad you did.
I hope that man is ok.

that's great you helped that guy out, but don't assume that the other 5 folks who didn't stop are monsters, maybe they've been rescuing puppies from a burning building all day and they're exhausted? i like to help people out and stuff but i don't make it a habit to do every single good deed that comes my way.

Lovely as in handsome? Could be fate, I say go find him at the hospital and see if he's okay. If your single, and in the market, don't let a good one slip by.

(okay, maybe I'm the only one who's sees a potential love match in everything. I can't help it. It's a character flaw.)

Oh, no - not handsome. Well, maybe, but he was on the floor, in the dark lol

He was just a nice guy... Noooo - I didn't mean nice like that.

Feel better about it all today.

Life goes on :)

Where did I assume they "are monsters"?

I'm sorry, but if you see a lone female on the street at 2am with a man on the floor, clearly something is wrong.. To be fair they may not have seen him, but they should have been able to see me.

And I was looking at every car that went past to see if one was either a police car or the ambulance coming.

I'm not saying they're monsters, people be who they are. Most of the time people don't like to acknowledge what is in front of their face, for whatever reasons.

The sad thing is (at least here in the US) it seems that if you stop to help someone you automatically become liable. People will sue for anything and I have heard too many stories about people being pulled from a car wreck and then turning around and suing the person that saved them because now they have back problems from being moved.

Not to mention, there are a lot of sickos that use that kind of thing to lure people in to rob them, rape them, whatever.

Very sad indeed.

while we were in florida there was a woman sitting on the ground crying and puking like crazy. The security guard wouldn't go near her and he just called an ambulance. Brian took out his flashlight and approached the woman and asked her if he could look at her eyes (to check her pupils to make sure she wasn't ODing on drugs or anything) The security guard told Brian to just leave her that an ambulance was on the way. Brian checked her eyes anyway and it just turns out she was just really really drunk. He told the security guard the info he found out about her and then the ambulance came.

people are afraid to help others anymore because of the ramifications that sometimes occur. If that woman had been on drugs or even just because she had been drinking she could have become violent. it's sad but this is what the world has turned into. A good deed on your part could turn very ugly.

I try to help others when I can but if I don't feel the situation is safe I will keep my distance and do what I can from there. but it is always a nice feeling to help someone who is truly in need. good for you and I hope you can find out how he is. Perhaps you could call the hospital and give them the info you have and see if they can point you in the direction of his room.

Sparks, that used to be true, but now there are "good samaritan" laws on the books that will protect you from that crap. Go ahead and help.

It however does not protect you from that person turning on you. It's sad but it happens. Sick twisted people will try to lure in unsuspecting people who are just trying to help. It's the classic "little girl I lost my dog do you want to help me find her" act. Those kinds of people hurt the ones that are truly in need but how do you know who to trust and who not to trust.

when I worked nights at the coffee shop I had a lady come in bleeding from her head. She had just been attacked by two girls with a bat. the girls were coming up the street as she came into the store... I saw them. They were heading towards the store. Luckily, the store was filled with people so they stopped short and decided not to come in. then when the police came they ran. had I been alone and helping that woman I could have been the next to receive a bat to the brain. This lady then became enraged that I had called an ambulance. Luckily she had no strength due to the blow to her head and the blood loss that she could NOT fight me. I gave her a chair and a towel for the blood until the ambulance arrived.
