My dog (1 year old) licks his paws to the point that he gives himself bald spots, he does it on all his paws, for example he will lick his front paw, the switch to the back & so on. The hair grows back but then he starts all over.
He has been tested for mange twice, came back negative & it was suggested that it is anxiety driven, but he does it when we are sitting right next to him which leads me to believe that it is not a case of seperation anxiety. Another suggestion was that it is allergies, he has been given an allergy shot which did nothing in terms of easing the licking. More recently I have read that some skinproblems can develop due to not enough animal protein, any suggestions? Thank you.

Westie paw licking too

My Westie does the same thing. However, it is localized to her front right paw/leg. I need to take her in as well. I was thinking anxiety or dermatitis sicne it is very prevalent in the breed.

I have also been giving her figh oil capsules to see if it helps. No signs that it is. I guess we are off to the vet next week.

From what you are saying it seems allergy related. Although allergies can be environmental and airborne, it sounds like this is food related. Often times a dog will continuously lick at the paws which is an indicator of food related allergies and is most likely the quality of food you are feeding. You can find excellent information at http://www.old-dog-treats-and-rawhide.com/dog-skin-problems.html This site covers food and skin extensively.

What are you feeding? I agree that it sounds food related. A quality diet change with a different protein and carb source may do the trick!
