I am getting my Boston Terrier at the end of September and have been reading up on housetraining, etc. A couple books say to paper train the dog before training it to go outside. Why can't I just train it to go outside from the beginning? Thanks for the help.

You can :D

You can go straight to outside training if that's what you want to do! Some people will say that it's best to go straight to outside.

I know that I paper trained Roxy, just because she was left at home, not crated for long periods of time.

It is much easier if you just train your dog to go directly outside. Go for it!

Train your pup to go outside first. You don't want to teach your pup something that he'll eventually have to un-learn. :)

I say outside only. Our routine was eat, potty, play, cuddle and then crate. If you're not going to crate, you can tie your dog to you instead. That way if he/she starts to potty, you can take them directly outside.

My pups were basically paper trained when they went to their new homes....I recommended putting some paper on the ground outside where they wanted their pups to go .

I personally feel that letting the dog pee/poop inside is sending mixed messages to the dog. I would got straight to taking him outside.

I say outside. You are letting your puppy know that outside is the place to potty... If you paper train, your puppy will think it is ok to potty in the house whether or not you have taken him or her outside..

When we fostered a pregnant bitch she was not house trained. What we did was paper train her, and gradually move the paper outside, but I must admit it was a huge pain in the butt!!

I have never paper trained again, and I never will, its much easier and much quicker to teach going outside from day one. Good luck with your pup, I love Bostons!!
