Hi there, I have a problem, maybe you could help? We have two corgi's both female and both have been spayed and both over weight. We have them on expensive weight control food, nutro ultra weight control. Both dogs get plenty of exercise up to 2 miles a day walking and lots of play time in the house and outside. We have reduced the portions down to 1 cup a day but both dogs seem hungry all the time. What should I do to help them lose weight without being so hungry all the time?

Thank you in advance,

David

Add canned green beans to thier food. They are very filling, most dogs really like them (especially mixed with food) and have hardly any calories.

The problem with weight control foods is they are high in carbohydrates and fillers and low in protein. It is likely they are not getting quite what they need out of this food.

In all honesty, you'd be better off having them on a regular, high quality food, and figuring how many calories they need for their ideal body weight.

As a side note, dogs do not utilize carbohydrates very efficiently so quite often, a high carb food can and will put weight on them.

What Newfie said. There are many high quality foods out there that are lower in calories, so they still get to feel "full" without having to each as much. Add some green beans (rinse the excess sodium off of them first though) and you should start to see some results in a couple weeks. Up their exercise as well.

Please correct me if I am wrong on this, but I think that dogs are supposed to be hungry all the time.

I don't mean in serious pain hungry or coughing up bile...but the dogs I have known would always happily eat more than they should.

The vast majority of dogs are overweight and part of the reason is that owners expect them to "push them selves away from the table" when they are full. My dog stares at me for a second or two after each meal like "is that all?" But, 10 minutes later he is sleeping it off in satisfied full tummy digestion mode.

In the wild, ahuge appetite was a great survival benefit, in homes, it has the opposite effect.

That said, I agree with the great advice you have gotten already. Feed high quality (not diet) food in reduced proportions, and ELIMINATE or Greatly cut back Treats.

Someone forgot to tell my Shadow that raw carrots are lowcal healthfood, so he gets one tiny biscuit every other day, and carrots to crunch for treats the rest of the time.
