Whenever my dog needs to go, he stand by the door and i take him outside on a leash. He usually does his buisness however whenever i open the door for him and make him go outside alone he just stands by the door. How can i train him to go potty outside alone even if he isnt on a leash.

How old is he? If he's young it will probably just take time for him to get the confidence.

I have the same problem with my dog (8 months) too! Since at our apartment the dog's aren't allowed to be off-leash, it's like if we're not right there he doesn't want to be outside. So when we go to our friends' houses, we must stand outside with him if he goes out back, otherwise he simply sits at the door and won't go into the yard. It sounds like we're in the same boat, rishabh99. I will certainly keep an eye on this board and see if anyone else can give advice.

is their anywhere you can go, someone that has a yard where you both could play without the leash? or an off leash park anywhere like that to build the self esteem..so they know they are safe even if you aren't right there?

Boris is the same way, when I open the back door it usually takes him about 3 minutes to actually go outside. But when he really has to go, he will go right away. Is your dog housetrained? Once he is totally housetrained and he really wants to pee, he will go, alone or not.

On a side note, a dog standing by the door doesn't necessarily mean they have to go. In your case I'm thinking that he wants a walk, and that's why he doesn't go outside when you don't go with him. He's waiting for you, sort of, because he's associated being at the door = having a walk.

It's just my experience though.

I have exactly the opposite problem with my Brutus..doesn't want to potty while on the leash. I tend to show my babies how much fun everything is to do. Maybe companionship is what the little one needs. Not that I'm saying YOU need to actually show how much fun it is to potty alone....LOL

Whenever i take him to a dog park and he isnt on a leash he seems to be fine...we play fetch and everthing. I dont think he dosnt go outside alone because of confident but earlier we used to "throw" him out of the house for a timeout. Maybe thats why he stands by the door to be let in?? Just guessing. Should i try taking him outside witih me without a leash and build upon that ?

Yep
I'd also suggest taking your dog out on a leash, and then taking it off. Once he's comfertable with this I would stand outside of the door and take the leash off. Encourage him to step away from you and go. If this goes smoothly and your both ready for you to open the door and have him go out I'd suggest opening the door, and if he doesn't go out by himself get his attention say "go on" or "go outside" or something like that and toss a treat a couple paces outside of the door. He'll catch on quick if he has to go bad !
