Has anyone here ever been to outer banks, North Carolina? I am looking for a beach near by kentucky that is dog freindly. I have heard that the outer banks is a very large dog loving community. If you have even went, did you bring your dog? what did you do, where did you stay? did you like your trip?

thanks :)

Dad's from NC, around Morehead City (which is near Cape Lookout). Mom and Dad had a beach house on the Outer Banks for over 20 years (sold it a couple of years ago) and we'd always bring our dogs and at least one cat.

Lots of folks bring their dogs to the beach - there is a leash law and Mom will literally chase after the thoughtless people who don't clean up after their dogs. The idiots don't seem to realize they could close the beach to all dogs if enough people complain about dog poop (and have every right to do so.)

Do a search on the web for vacation rental companies along the Outer Banks (Sun & Surf and Prudential are a couple of companies on the island where we rent - the whole island is called Bogue Island, with various communities like Emerald Isle, Indian Beach, Salter Path). Companies will list rental properties that allow dogs (usually a max of 2 and you have to pay a pet deposit). Off season is a LOT cheaper and if you don't mind walking a block or two, houses that aren't on the beach are cheaper than beachfront property but don't have as nice a view. It's a great place to visit!

Lol! Dad's actually a Creeker (Broad Creek, off Hwy 24). We've been vacationing in that area of the Outer Banks since the 60s.

The Outer banks is great, and a great place to take your dog. It isn't crowded like Myrtle is!

About NC

Hey! I live in Swansboro, NC which is near the Crystal Coast (Emerald Isle, Atlantic Beach, Morehead City). I also lived in the Outer Banks for a summer. Depending on what time of year you go, the Outer Banks can be very crowded and the beaches are always extremely packed in the summer along with the insane traffic. The Crystal Coast, which is a little south of the Outer Banks is more laid back and less touristy. The beaches always seem very dog friendly as well. Here's some info

Hey! Swansboro! One of our favorite places to shop (and Mom's favorite place to get an egg cream soda). Dad went to high school in Swansboro. (I think there were maybe twelve kids in his graduating class - it was awhile ago.)
We stay in Emerald Isle and usually go before the season really starts so it's not too bad as far as crowds go, but it's sure grown up over the years! Used to consider the beach crowded if we saw more than one family every 100 yards or so...

Snark, I'm originally from Pennsylvania. We would always vacation in Emerald Isle and my Mom would just have to stop in Swansboro to shop. I loved the area and recently was able to find a job close by. Now she comes to visit regularly, but I think its just so she can go to her favorite shops downtown. Such a small world!

colsen4nc: :D It sure is! Guess you've been to Yanna's for breakfast/brunch? And when you were on Emerald Isle, did you ever go to Big Oak Drive-In in Salter Path for their shrimp burgers? They're the best!!

My in-laws have a beach house over in Duck. Even though we were not able to bring the pups (west to east coast travel would have been difficult), there was a store there called "The Outer Barks" that is all about dogs. They even have a "yappy hour" and other types of meet-ups. There's also plenty to do there for us parents as well. :)

I have been there and loved it. We have never brought the dogs, but I am sure you could if you got a pet or dog friendly hotel.
We usually stay in a hotel (all different ones) or rent a beach house (we only did one time and loved it). It is really nice and pretty! Good luck!
