First off let me introduce myself a little bit. My name is Drew. I am a college student who is very into the outdoors. Mountain Biking, Paddling, Backpacking, Road Cycling, Bouldering, Splunking.... you get the point I am sure. I even chose my college, North Georgia, due to the outdoor settings it provides. I have always wanted some type of outdoors dog... Like a caucasian , Lab, Golden, or something like that.

My aunt breeds Yorkshire Terriers and she has been doing it for a long long time. She lives near my grandmother, within walking distance, so I have really gotten to know her dogs. I mean I knew how they acted towards myself, strangers, and all that good stuff. I did a lot of research and KNEW that just because the parent dogs had a good overall temperment and were for the most part active and VERY loyal the puppy may not be.

I ended up getting a yorkie from her for two reasons

1) I live in a rental house for my college years. I need a companion who is small enough to have a good time in my little yard and small house. He is also perfect because he doesn't shed too much (I know he will have to lose some of that puppy fluff though) and that will please my land lord!

2) His mother, the bitch, developed "milk weed" and it nearly killed her. It was something we had seen in a few of our cows over the years. So my grandmother bottle fed the pups and when I would come home I got attached to the little puppy with a white foot (back to tan now he has lost it).

Well I know the Yorkshire Terrier isn't the typical outdoors dog. I have been looking and researching about them as much as possible but haven't found much about them and how they really do in the outdoors.
I know his dad will play fetch until he falls over dead... Before I got my little guy I spent many years tossing a ball and playing rope with his parents :)
So if anyone is a Yorkie owner or knows of anyone taking a Yorkie backpacking I was curious if I could maybe get him going 15-20 miles a day at my side. I would pack as carefully for him as I would myself... I'm just not sure if a dog that little can hold up doing that day after day for let's say five - thirty days at a time. He is 13 weeks old now and I take him out in the woods with me now but we only do about 4 miles. He loves it out there and does really well. I am just trying to get him adjusted to the outdoors. I mean hopefully this is my dog for the next twenty years. Whether he turns into an outdoor companion or would rather sit around at the house being a lap dog to my wife. But anytime I am out the door heading fishing these past few weeks on my break he has been with me, he knows I bring water and food long enough for the trip and doesn't mind staying out and exploring all day with me.

I think that's really cute! =] A tough outdoorsy guy and his Yorkie.

I doubt that such a little dog could handle hiking 20 miles, especially on rough terrain. However, since he's so tiny, I'm sure you could find a backpack that he could ride in when he gets tired.

Also... more importantly, I demand pictures of the little guy!

No we wouldn't be climbing up rock or anything. And the best part is... If it does get ruff for him I can pick him and up carry him through a rock section. For the most part we'd just make our way down a worn down path... But for sure I would never push the little guy and a regular water break for me is always welcome :) He proves to be a good fly fishing partner. I would just love to incorporate him into my agenda even more hah hah

That's awesome! Little dogs are still dogs, and need to get outside & get exercise. He must love spending so much time with his Daddy.

What is his name? and, where are the pics?!? =p

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm I'll leave the reaction to Yorkie owners , I personally wouldn't even ask my Goldens to go 20 miles, though I know they would for me .

I own a Yorkie, and Yorkie mix, and we take them hiking a couple times a month. They love it. We don't go 20 miles :)D) but I'm sure if you've got your little guy on a good diet, and have him really conditioned, he would be happy to follow you on your way. Like ihartgonzo said though, you might want to bring some sort of carrier so that he can rest. Just for example, say every 5 miles you carry him a mile or two(since you mentioned he's gone 4 miles before). I know my shih tzu gets winded just going on our little "fun hikes" but the Yorkies keep up great! :) Good luck! Do you have any pictures of the little guy? ^_^

His name is Alex. I will get some pictures up tomorrow for you :)
Kind of wierd how you always imagined ending up with something the size of a dump truck able to take 15 degrees nights on top of a mountain and wind up with something so small and I couldn't be happier.

lol! I've ALWAYS had large breeds (Labs, Goldens, Border Collies, Huskies, German Shepherds) and then my grandmother gave us a Silky Terrier, and I haven't been with out a small dog since. :) My silky passed on about 6-7 months ago :)() and we now own a Silky Terrier/Yorkie mix, a Yorkie, and a Shih Tzu. The little ones grow on ya! :D

Yeah I pretty much figured he wouldn't be able to last much more than 10-15 miles, and that's with him stowed away in my pack with his head poking out for a good bit of it hah hah. I am going to start small with him. I figure he can easily go for a twenty mile trip over a three day span (In a few more months that is!!) But as you read this don't think I am going to get out and leave him without food, purified water, or walk him to death. I would NEVER push my dog, I just want to get him out on his terms for something like that and have as big of an adventure as HE wants. I appreciate all the feed back guys!

Next is to figure out how to get him in the Kayak..... LOL I am joking guys!!!

I always laughed at the big guys with small dogs... And now I find myself in that situation Dixie's Mom. He has really grown on me. I usually take him for walks on the square of the small little town I live in. I get a lot of wild looks with him, but everyone loves him.

Whether he's a Yorkie or something the size of a dump truck sounds to me that Alex is just about the luckiest dog on the planet. I have no idea what those little guys are capable of but you sound very caring and sensible and as long as you don't push him farther than he can go ... well, I think you'll have a great life together,

The only thing I'd say is take it easy on him now because you don't want to overstress growing bones and when you are ready to go for a major hike, don't rely on him to tell you when he needs a break. If he's got a big heart he may keep right on going alongside you long after he should be having a rest.

I say he's a lucky little dog.

save him some space in your back pack, and go for it.

The happiest dogs are the ones who get to spend the most time with their people, big or tiny.

Looking forward to the photos. :D

I think it is wonderful that you love him so much and he obviously loves you too. You may have to carry him some to let him rest but if you care for him right as it sounds like you are doing I think you should take him with you whenever you can.

I think it's awesome you're turning your Yorkie into a hiking dog! Way to dispell the myth that they're little froo-froo dogs! :D Like everyone else has said, be sure to save him some space in your backpack for when he gets tired...and being a terrier of sorts, they may not always let you know and you'll have to make the call yourself. But I'm sure you already knew that.

He is so adorable! :D
I have a ten pounder that everyone assumes is a wimpy little thing but she can keep up with the best of them and I take her wherever my border collie mix goes! ;)
