Aww, poor guy. It sounds like he has had a rough life, despite how sweet he is.
Not sure I'd necessarily judge him as coming from a rough background, or even label his once-upon-a-time owners as complete a-holes ... maybe just clueless ones not prepared to care for a dog? (Hmmm ... perhaps he had once been a puppy obtained "for the kids"?) Seems he once had a neglectful home for sure, but not an overtly abusive one. I can see the difference from Marley ... poor Marley had shown very clear signs of abuse at the hands of some man. :( Marley had once been an AC-seizure .... it takes a LOT for AC to forcibly seize an animal. By contrast Buddy looks and acts like he came from clueless owners who did not train, groom, or exercise him ... then maybe they got tired of having him around.

^^^ Exactly how so many dogs end up in shelters as "strays", and like Buddy are never re-claimed by their former "loving" owners. I get the impression Buddy was dumped by somebody who was tired of him. He came in with no collar... and there's no way he could have broken it. He's a very big boy, but he doesnt' pull hard enough to break a collar. Goldens are some of the cutest puppies ever ... it should be illegal to be that cute! But they quickly turn into large dogs that can be a real handful if they have had no training.

This big guy has no anxiety issues, besides fear reaction to big dogs. Other than that he's very trusting. He loves little kids ... just does that shutting-eyes-tight thing when their hands come near his face. But he remains trusting, does not pull away or even attempt to move away from them at all. It seems like he just expects that they won't know any better and may accidently poke him in the eye ... but that he "forgives" them for possibly not knowing any better. Hope that makes sense ... lol.

He did not get much training at all. He was allowed to get very overweight and flabby-muscled. He was clearly indoor/outdoor ... probably relegated to the backyard when he had started the adolescent Golden-crazies around human food. But it would have been just as easy for his former people to train him.
Maybe they didn't know how? He learns quickly and very much wants to please. He just acts a little confused ... like he's never been shown what was expected of him.

I, too, think you should pick the name that you feel fits him. If you feel he is a "Buddy", that's perfect. What matters is that YOU are the people saying his name, and YOU make his name a positive thing,
Yeah, that makes sense. He does seem to like his name, he likes hearing it. We know we could easily change it. We generally suck at naming though, so usually keep the old names with adoptions or fosters. Cats no, because our adopted or fostered cats never answered to their old names. Cats will always come when they are called ... but only if they like their names! ;) Gotta get the cat to tell you what it's name is ... sounds weird but it works and they never fail to come when called afterward.
