We upgraded our fireplace. I LOVE it! We still have to have tiles laid around it and we'll have someone build a mantel and surrounds for us- but after our horror story with the previous contractors we are finally on our way! :) It is actually very efficient (rates as a wall furnace) and accomplishes the zone heating we wanted to do in our house. We don't use half the rooms and it's silly to heat them.

We went from this:

To this:

I LOVE it!

Thanks!

We do have a design picked out... we went off of this design:

It is just a little simplified to look a little warmer, "cottage-y". And then we have this overmantel design on top. It is so hard to describe. It was this one "big" project we wanted to do to the house, because it was so outdated before. This is actually what it looked like when we bought the house (no wonder it was on the market for awhile, lol). Bye bye weird greenish-pink ceramic tiles and "tv nook".

We'll have slate tiles to go on the hearth and a brick design (also slate) to go around the fireplace.

Renee.. it's a Mendota. From doing research, Jotul was one of my big contenders, but the dealers in our area did not have them on display. And I can't get myself to spend money on something I can't see in person first (especially a bigger purchase).

It has a lot of the same look as the Jotuls always have had. I managed a fireplace and woodstove store at one time -- working for a real jerkwad, of course. Most of the manufacturers copy each others' designs, like furniture manufacturers their favorite design tool is often a camera, and many of the designs stem from the traditional European ones so there's a lot of similarity in aesthetic and function.

It's going to look gorgeous and cozy when you get it all done. You'll never get Miss T to move from out in front of the fireplace in the winter, lol. Might as well get her a floofy rug now :D
