Tonight my other half gave me the surprise of my life, one of his co-workers stumbled upon a little abandoned kitten in one of his hay sheds. He is so young that he imprinted to his pet ducks and was following them around the farm. Anyway to cut a long story short he didn't have the time to give the little kitten the chance it needed at life, so the lil mite found his way to me.

I was in shock when my OH got him out of a box when he got home - he is so small, the only thing i managed to say was "OMG how old is he, we need to get him to a vet" so off we went to the vet, at first they thought his eyes had only just opened and that he couldn't be more than 2 weeks old - judging by the size of him - but my OH's co-worker said that he has been following the ducks around for a week now with his eyes open - to be honest i believe he has only survived this long because the co-worker was giving him half a raw ducks egg every day with some milk - although it would have gone straight through him, i think it was a good source of the right stuff.

The vet after hearing this thinks he maybe 3-4 weeks old but extremely under weight - he weighs 108 grams. And is about the size of a set of keys.

But he has some go in him - he doesn't sleep, just constantly after affection, poor lil thing, everytime i look at him i nearly cry, he should be with his little kitten family. I have grown so attached to him already.

At the moment his name is Monster, bit of sarcasim "Cause hes so huge" but name suggestions are welcome. We are also worried about Demi and Rory and how they will act when they can be in the same room without Monster in the crate - Rory is eye balling him, and growling - help in stopping this would be great if anyone has any suggestions.
Here are some piccies of him

I thought i would use this forum to keep an update on Monster and his comings and goings.

Monster slept pretty much through the whole night. Although i did get up once to clean a little poo up - which i was happy to do because it means everything is travelling through him - yeh.

OH got up at 5:30 this morning to go to work - which in turn woke up myself and Monster so i fed him 10mL of his formula and played with him until his eyes started to close again. At the moment he is back in his crate asleep and i will feed him again in a few hours.

This little man has a strong will to survive, i'm confident he is going to be fine.

He's so tiny! I miss having barn cat kittens around...they're smaller than most domestic housecats and just wonderful.

Good luck with him!

zoom - ive never heard anyone use the term barn cat before - is this just another term for wild cat? Sorry if its a stupid question, i'm an Aussie so probably call the same things, different things.

he's really cute. and he's really lucky to have chanced upon you in this life. :) I don't have many suggestions since the last baby critter i raised by hand was a goat kid that was taken from his mum a few weeks too early as well. I just fed him with I think was formula for rejected foals and gave him about a bottle to two bottles at a time until we were able to wean him fully.

If you are keeping Monster warm, safe, and well fed... you are probably doing the best job possible. As far as names - I have to admit I like the name "monster" for a cat... especially one as small as he is.

good luck with him and do keep us updated!! :)

mojozen - i'm feeding him some formula the vet gave me. He gets 50mL half strength a day broken up over 4 times a day. Both my boxer pups re being desexed on monday so the vet said to bring monster back in for a check up to see how he is going and whether he should then receive full strenth formula.

I know it my sound dramatic but i think he has already put on some weight even though he hasn't even been with me for 24 hours. his spine no longer feels like razor blades, theres now some meat there, not alot but enough to take the edge off his spine - does formula usually work this quick?

Just being fed appropriate food can work that quick... or it can seem like it does. I know that goat kid filled out really quick once we got him home. Be glad you aren't nursing him, he would butt me if I didn't hurry up with that bottle! ;)

LOL :D and there strong little buggers.
Yes, Indeed... by the time he was weaned if he butted me he could knock me back a few steps. He stopped doing that so much once he started to graze on his own. He'd still attempt it if he wanted attention... He was a good goat after all that. :)

my two boxers have been with my cat for over five years, and still have yet to get along. I think it's better if you get the cat after the dog, but it depends a lot on the dog's and cat's personality. i used to have a golden, and he got a long great with the cat. but it did take time. remember, patience is a virtue!

P.S. CUTE PICS!!!!

Barb04 - i think i know what Demi and Rory were thinking whilst they were looking at Monster ;)

Ok heres my daily update on Monster

To begin with i named him Monster as abit of a joke, but he is starting to live up to his name, hes a little monster and proud of it.
He doesn't sleep during the day - or if he does he makes sure i dont see it. Hes like an energiser bunny.
Monster is very vocal now, i think he has learnt that i am his source of food so whenever i am around he constantly meows - Do young kittens do this to their mothers?

Also he knows what the bottle looks like, and i give fore-warning anyone near him when the bottle comes out better keep all arms and legs in the vehicle so to speak, because monster will bite anything near him to get to that bottle.

I fed him at 6am this morning and went to pull the bottle away from him to get a measurement of how much he'd had and the little bugger latched onto a finger....ouchies!
When monster first arrived if he nibbled on you it didn't hurt but now he has so much energy when he latches on, you know about it.

Hes going on his first road trip tonight - its doggie obedience night for Demi and Rory. I take them to an obedience school about 1 1/2 hrs from home (long way to drive but i love the instructors - really patient with Rorys behaviour - at the moment he is eyeballing other dogs and actually grabbed hold of a pup that got in his face last week - horrible horrible experience, he didn't break skin but he sure let the pup know he wasn't happy).

Anyway my sister has offered to look after him and feed him while i'm at training - the car drive will be an experience, two dogs and little monster

I will take some more photos in the next day or so, he is putting on weight already and its only been two days :)
