Hm...

I always thought her Golden puppies were from a rescue. D= I heard that somewhere.

I hope Oprah mentions something about where her own dogs are from. Puppy mills are horrible, but so are backyard breeders; they're just much less sensationalized and villified. Hopefully the show will actually educate people on what makes a reputable breeder!

Well, if worse comes to worse bybs are a step up from mills.

I'm hoping they talk about reputable breeders but I'm hoping MORE that they talk about rescue dogs.

It's really my big issue about anti puppy mill campaigns... it's good, sure, but they really need to educate about why it's important to find a good breeder too... and so far I have yet to see a puppy mill campaign mention BYBs... so uninformed people just go there... Seriously, a lot of people know about puppy mills and wouldn't buy from a pet store, and yet they get their puppies from newspaper ads. *shrug*

I hear that, Fran.

I don't think I have EVER seen substantial tips on finding a reputable breeder on any show, or popular website, or newspaper article, etc.

I am all for rescue... but, unfortunately, a lot of people see rescue dogs as "damaged goods"... and many people would just rather buy a puppy. It'd be awesome if good advice was actually put out there!

there is someone around here that is a byb that has had chi mixes like clockwork litter after litter. They sell them for a 100 dollars. IF they are a step up, it would be a baby step only in maybe the dog gets more attention.

I believe the person she got her Goldens from is a bit more than a BYB as I believe AKC an Animal Control, was involved with them prior.

Again one can only hope some mention of that will be made and some mention of learning beforehand and doing research etc.

Sandar Goldens is where they came from.

According to the Sandar website, they have "some pedigrees with 4 generations of Excellent hips" and they "breed for conformation and health". I dunno, the website is very incomplete.

Regardless... I'm disappointed in Oprah. D= Imagine having BILLIONS of dollars, and the opportunity to get advice and support from the most knowledgable dog people in the world, and turning around and supporting a PM or a BYB. I guess ignorance really doesn't have that much to do with money or status.

I think she is a lot more vocus on helping Africa and other parts of the world than learning about the Dos and Donts of Dog Ownership. She is a busy woman.

And so what that she is afraid of pit bulls. Even I was afraid and I'd still be afraid of them if it wasn't for me being bored one day and deciding to look them up. Oprah isn't a super human. She do not know EVERYTHING. She just need to be steered in the right direction and get informed. Disliking her just because she is not clued on dogs. She is more focus in helping PEOPLE. She has done a lot for this world, more so than almost anyone.

I'm done.:D

About being terrified by pit bulls.... who wouldn't be? They have such a bad rep. Before I got Reggin, I was also weary with pit bulls and I still am with ones I dont know.
Are you serious? As someone mentioned before... she is an icon. A lot of people worship her... if she'd get her nose colored blue, people would get theirs, too. If Oprah says its okay to be afraid of bullies instead of showing the gentle, good- natured side then guess what? People will be wary of them instead of learning something new: that bullies are lovers!
I didn't see the show where she had a pit on... but if she was really freaking out because of the pit... well, that is bad and I can not understand how someone can not see that... especially if you own one.

Sooo... the whole anti-bsl slogan to "Punish the deed and not the breed" doesn't apply then? Yes, they have a bad rep... but especially as an owner we have to work against that! I am not more weary of a strange pit than a strange lab and general statements like that are feeding into BSL.

I just read this on tmz as well. (I know, I know not the most accurate source but they are right alot). She has said that she loved her cocker but in the future would look to rescue. So maybe she has learned her lesson. Hopefully those of you who can watch friday will let us know.

Okay... I just saw this in an article on MSN.

Oprah said:

"I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show," she says."

here's the whole article

Oprah dedicates puppy-mills show to her dog
Her cocker spaniel, Sophie, died last month from kidney failure

updated 9:32 p.m. ET, Tues., April. 1, 2008
CHICAGO - Oprah Winfrey plans to dedicate a show investigating abuses at puppy mills to her cocker spaniel, Sophie, who died last month from kidney failure.

“Sophie gave me 13 years of unconditional love. She was a true love in my life,†Winfrey says on the broadcast scheduled to air Friday. (Advance remarks from the show were released Tuesday by Harpo Productions.)

The show features special correspondent Lisa Ling investigating puppy mills, which Ling calls “horrific†and “haunting.â€

Winfrey says the show is “for anybody anywhere who loves a dog, has ever loved a dog, or just cares about their basic right to humane treatment.â€

While Sophie was not a product of a puppy mill, and Winfrey’s three current dogs were adopted from breeders, Winfrey says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter.

“I would never, ever adopt another pet now without going to a shelter to do it. I am a changed woman after seeing this show,†she says.
