sooo GTS kindly reminded me to do something with my IP thingy last night, and it fixed my issue of my non working internet.

However, now my laptop seems to get sick of having the internet work for more than an hour, and I have to re open the command prompt box thingy, type in:

ipconfig /release

and then...

ipconfig /renew all

...and then the internet works again

But then dies again an hour later.

I mean, I guess I can';t complain much, but frankly, I would prefer not to have the internet crap out on me every hour, haha.

Anyone know what the dealio is??

thanks :D

Dunno, unless your computer just changes IPs randomly and by renewing it manually it finds one it likes.

But networking/connecting outside the computer isn't my strong point in computers.

Ok, I'm going to get technical here...

Do you have a hub?

If not, hub (Netgear FE104) and connect it between the cable modem (or DSL, whichever you use) and the router.

This should fix it.

Also, what sort of computer is it?

I was going to ask about the router too. I was having a similar issue here, and it turned out my router was the problem. I'd have to renew the ip address on the router nearly every day or I wouldn't get a connection. I replaced it and have not had an issue since.

DanL... Yes, those $60 Netgear/Linksys/Belkin routers leave a LOT to be desired.

I have a older Microsoft branded one that works very well. When time comes for a new one, I will be getting a new Apple Airport Extreme. We use these where I work and they are awseome, and being a Apple product, pretty too. LOL

Anyhoo, Dreeza... If you have a router, power it off for like 5 minutes (this ensures all the current gets our of the caps and you get a true reset) and then fire it back up.

Good luck!

Okay, are you using the school's wireless or your own? If you're using the schools, right click on "My Network Places" the click Properties, then double click on your wireless connection. Then hit properties again, scroll down in that little list to TCP/IP protocol, select that, then hit properties yet again, now make sure everything is set to "obtain IP address automatically."

If it's yours, or like an apartments, whoever set it up may have set the lease on an IP address to renew every hour, if you can get into your router, I can help you change this, otherwise you might need to contact whoever provides your internet.

Sorry this isn't a little more detailed, but I gotta run to work. :(

Really? I can see a lease that short at a coffee shop or mall, but at a residential place?? If that ends up being it, somebody go smack that admin. LOL

I dunno, it's possible, especially if the person didn't really know what they were doing. When I lived in the dorms, the wireless always died after like an hour or two. I went to the help desk and they said it was supposed to be that way. :p

Everything on our network was set up to be a permenant lease, but then I just turned DHCP off so everything is on a fixed IP. Everything seems much much more stable.

KCooper (ACooper's husband) pointed me to a Buffalo router for my wireless and I have to tell you that for fifty bucks I have not had a single problem anywhere in the house since I've had it. Just FYI.

i gotta run to class, but my PC and my roomie's laptop work perfectly internet-wise...

So I can't imagine why only my laptop would have issues...we lived here last year too, and it never did this!! And yeah, this is wireless internet...i steal it off my laptop, cause for some reason, whenev I try to connect to my own off my laptop, it just lags at "acquiring network connection"...this has been an ongoing prob, but just not worth my time to fix, since im pretty sure the internet i am stealing is from someone else in my apt complex, and the apt provides it to us anyways...lol

Are your PC and roommates computers hardwired in, or wireless as well? I dunno if I quite understand. Are you connecting with your laptop to your own internet, or someone else's?

nope, nothing is hardwired it. We have a router connected to the wall plug, and everything picks up the wireless from that...HOWEVER, our wireless, the one that we have a password on and stuff, normally doesn't work as well as this other, nonsecure wireless...so we usually end up using that one. My laptop refuses to connect to our personal wireless, so I have to use the unsecure one.

I am still having to release and renew my IP every few hours...I really don't get why. The wireless we are using, we have been using for over a year, and its never been an issue.

1st if everyone else is not having problems...it's your computer
Check for updates for your wireless card in your laptop
also how strong your connection is, could be a problem

hey thanks for the response. I don't really know how to check for updates...but I did completely re-install the software already. I've had the card for like at least 3 years, and don't remember ever having to update anything, lol.

It is def my laptop and not the connection. The internet will be working fine, then all of a sudden it stops working, although it still shows a strong connection. The second is do "ipconfig /release" then "Ipconfig /renew" ...it works perfectly again for about 2 hours, when I have to repeat the process...
