Hi,

I recently bought a gorgeous black labrador retriever puppy with show potential. I searched for a puppy for quite a while until I found the right puppy with the wide head and the beautiful angles. I wanted to use him as a stud dog (given that he would pass all his clearances at 2 years old). When I got him both of his testicles were dropped. When I took him into the vet for his last set of shots this week I was told that one of his testicles went back up. This supposedly happens when the dog's body grows fast.
I was told that the testicle sting can't keep up with the body and that the testicle gets pulled back up. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone and whether you think that there is a good chance of the testicle dropping again. Also, if it does drop again would you still use the dog for breeding?

Thanks for the advice.

I don 't k now the answers as I always have females, but I am sure you will get lots of questions about your breeding the dog.

This is a thread I posted a while ago.. it's got some good information on page 1 and 2. Saje gives some great links, and I found 1 or 2 good ones.

I don't know about the testicle going back UP into his body.. but wait it out and see. If it does not come down again, he needs to be neutered immediately. Info in the links of why. If it drops again.. um.. I dunno if I would use him for breeding. Maybe that's something to ask a canine expert..

If it doesn't come back down.. I'm sorry, hon. :( It's just a chance you take..

If it doesn't come back down, neuter him.

If it does...well...ask the breeder if or how many times this has happened to her. Then be extra vigilant on the rest of his tests, OFA, thyroid, etc.

What is he eating to make him grow so fast that his testicle would rescind? If that's happening, then chances are his joints are suffering a bit as well.

Cryptorchid is generally genetic. If his testicle is going back up into his flank area there is a good chance it could stay up there. If this happens, the dog can not be shown, should not be used for breeding and needs to be neutered. If a testicle stays inside the body of an animal, the temperature is too high for the sperm to survive and many times makes the male sterile and very prone to testicular cancer.

If you purchased this dog with the intent to breed and show and he ends up with a crypto, I see a talk with his breeder in your future.

Best of luck.

Wow, how old is your puppy? I can't even imagine a pup dropping his testicles by the time the last set of shots is done. *confused*

There isn't really anything to worry about, unless both testicles haven't fully dropped by a year of age. If they haven't, or one still hasn't, a vet check is needed, and he'd likely need to be neutered. But many dogs drop later on, or one after another. My boy PJ had one testicle already starting to drop when I got him at 7 months of age. The second didn't follow until about a month or 2 later.

This is what happened to my boy, Solo -- and why I'm now paranoid about what I name my dogs. At 9 weeks of age he had two testicles. At 4 months he had one. He is now ten months old and it still hasn't come down. This is very common in singleton puppies though I'll never know why. It is also genetic in most cases -- and very common in my breed. I'll be working harder in future breedings to avoid monorchid/chryptorchid puppies. Though I wouldn't breed Solo for other reasons, it is sad to have a monorchid puppy pop up in a litter. The way I look at it though, I'm working very hard to prevent epilepsy, cancer, etc. I can't prevent everything, though I may try my hardest. Monorchidism is not a huge priority compared to epilepsy.

If he was sold for show you can likely get another puppy from the breeder. I know that if I sell someone a show puppy and it doesn't turn out I will send them another. I would wait though, tell the breeder now that you may be intetrested in a replacement pup so that she knows now before you make a decision when he is older and it still hasn't dropped.

Maybe I missed it but did you say how old?

My golden when he was a puppy used to actually "suck" his back in and sometimes they'd be up for a while and sometimes they'd come back down.

He was actually able to get my female pregnant before he was of age to be fixed. So you might still have hope of breeding.

Of course if it doesn't come back down then you won't be able to show him when he's older.

We did end up fixing my Golden earlier than the vet wanted since he got my GSD preggers, I really wanted to show him though because of his lines and already had a handler.

If the testicle hasn't descended by 9 months of age, have him neutered immediately. Not only does that testicle become sterile and have an insane chance at becoming cancerous, but this is a condition that is often times genetic. No sense trying to pass along serious faults.
