I would like to add a few things, but please none of this is in no way to try to get anything started.
In the US most of the dangerous diseases we vaccinate our children for our practically extinct. We have to give our children these shots because it is the law. And that is why they practically don't excist (sp?), When your child goes to school every child in that school has their shots. The reason I am very careful with my children is because of flu's, virus's, etc., not that I think they will get a terrible death causing disease from the floor. When I take my children to a dr. appt. they know not to touch the toys and to keep a distance from people there. My youngest sits on my lap and the older one sits beside me. It may seem extreme, but I know the toys are covered in:
Snot
Spit
And dirty fingerprints from sickly kids. My kids are not sissy boys, really the only place I am like that is at the dr. office and public bathrooms. But they are my kids and I am the one to stay up all night with them when they are sick.
Now for the puppy at petsmart, there are no laws regulating puppy shots. (only rabie shots) which they don't get till about 4 months old. Maybe you will see 6 puppies in there,(not to mention adult dogs) you don't know if any of them have had any shots. And since it is not governed by law, all the puppy diseases are still common and previlaint.
I personally would not take that chance. Some diseases are even caught airborne. My dogs are very well socialized and have been alot of places, but none have ever been in petsmart or the like. They are all vaccinated against the common diseases (which I do myself) except for rabies. They have an annual checkup and I give the vet the health records and he only ever gives a rabie shot when needed. I also do all my own deworming's. And not Hartz crap, This is the same stuff the vet uses. Which usually you can get OTC for far cheaper!!
I also buy my flea preventatives online, not from a vet.
Dog owners should do some research on how diseases and worms are transferred. Once they have the knowledge, it is only common sense that will tell you what to do or not to do.
Thanks,
Julie.
