Time for everyone to be nice now and settle abit, or I'll tie you to the couch. Ask Yukon when he gets to crazy that's what happens to him and he is not overly impressed by it, but it works. Pleasure learning from everyone. :)

I would like to add a few things, but please none of this is in no way to try to get anything started.

In the US most of the dangerous diseases we vaccinate our children for our practically extinct. We have to give our children these shots because it is the law. And that is why they practically don't excist (sp?), When your child goes to school every child in that school has their shots. The reason I am very careful with my children is because of flu's, virus's, etc., not that I think they will get a terrible death causing disease from the floor. When I take my children to a dr. appt. they know not to touch the toys and to keep a distance from people there. My youngest sits on my lap and the older one sits beside me. It may seem extreme, but I know the toys are covered in:
Snot
Spit
And dirty fingerprints from sickly kids. My kids are not sissy boys, really the only place I am like that is at the dr. office and public bathrooms. But they are my kids and I am the one to stay up all night with them when they are sick.

Now for the puppy at petsmart, there are no laws regulating puppy shots. (only rabie shots) which they don't get till about 4 months old. Maybe you will see 6 puppies in there,(not to mention adult dogs) you don't know if any of them have had any shots. And since it is not governed by law, all the puppy diseases are still common and previlaint.
I personally would not take that chance. Some diseases are even caught airborne. My dogs are very well socialized and have been alot of places, but none have ever been in petsmart or the like. They are all vaccinated against the common diseases (which I do myself) except for rabies. They have an annual checkup and I give the vet the health records and he only ever gives a rabie shot when needed. I also do all my own deworming's. And not Hartz crap, This is the same stuff the vet uses. Which usually you can get OTC for far cheaper!!
I also buy my flea preventatives online, not from a vet.
Dog owners should do some research on how diseases and worms are transferred. Once they have the knowledge, it is only common sense that will tell you what to do or not to do.

Thanks,
Julie.

Here rabies is not law however they run a clinic each year to encourage it. But you are right the kids can't go to school if not vaccinated and I'm careful with mine as well. For the same reason as you, I'm the one up all night if they are sick.
As far as puppy goes he is vaccinated til 1 year then will need another booster. He goes almost everywhere with us but we don't allow him to touch noses or sniff butts or anything like that. Also very careful for him to not pick up anything off ground or floor. He is good about that too.
We all love our kids and our dogs and sometimes get very passionate about them. Thank you for the information it was great.

Last week end I went to petsmart to buy some stuff for the dogs. I met three adorable puppies... One was 9 weeks, the other 7 weeks, the other 8 weeks. The 8 weeks puppy was sooo small, and the owner was holding it (maltese I think?). The poor thing was shaking, but it's good for him to see new things!

But the other two. Oh, they were adorable, a boxer and a lab. But they were on leash on the floor. I'll pass that the lab owners were buying eukaniba food, but how can they leave a non vaccinated puppy on the floor in a petstore?

That made me really mad. Of course I didn't say anything, but do they even realize the risks they are running for their dog??? Didn't their vet tell them it's not safe for a dog to be in contact with other dogs until they got their full set of shots? Even on the forums I read, I keep seeing people who say they are taking their 9 weeks old puppy everywhere, are people that misinformed or irresponsible? Or am I just paranoid not to leave Tips on leash outside until he got all his shots in 3 weeks?
ecuse me fran, but i was one who said i took my 9 week old pup evrywhere, but he was vaccinated. yes, surprisingly people are misinformed, there are many things to learn about dogs and it is possible to not know, which i agree they should, but many on this forum who have had their dog out, unvaccinated are young, so we have to give them slack on some things, for a kid this is beiing responsible just coming on this forum!
but i see you are concerned.. um i guess puppies arnt supposed to have shots till after 9 weeks, but my vet suggested now so he was done at 9, which i swhen i took him to petsmart, just for every1s knowledge. sono one hates me :)
oh and be4 he had his shots i socialized him by holding him , walking him aroung, and when some1 with their dog wanted to meet them i just politely said he doesnt have his shots, i think that is what people should do, im my opinion

I took my puppy to petsmart yesterday but I held him the entire time basically. We had to get him a leash and collar because didn't get one from the shelter and all the other collars we had are too big for him (except Hannah's baby collar is a little small). Plus our vet is like two minutes away from Petsmart and we didn't want to drive all the way to the vets than back home (which is a half hour trip one way) and then pack out to petsmart.

Fran, I had no idea, as I'm sure many didn't, that English wasn't your native language! One of the things that we've all got to be aware of on a forum like this is linguistic blunders. Sometimes things just don't come across in the tone in which they are meant.

As far as socializing time goes, I've always heard about the 16 weeks window, but as Charley is paranoid about the pups going off the farm until they are several months old (he thinks, for some reason, that I might allow them to be stolen or lost???), I don't do that. They're actually quite well socialized though, especially for a breed that makes Dobermans look like social butterflies, lol!
im glad you said you can still styart socializing at 16 weeks, bcuz my dogs 13 and i was worried since he still reacts badely to people and dogs it might be too lklate to socialize him (he is in pup school) trying my best. u just made some off my worries dissappear renee thanx:)...my friend is coming with her new pu on monday...chocolate lab...9 weeks were gonna walk them together...;this will be probably the most he will ever interact with a dog so far!

I feel bad again her guys. Making me cry because we hurting other people's feelings again. Lets stop with the excuse me and the rolling eyes. Eveybody needs to respect everybody else for there opinions. We may not always agree and that's ok but we can be a bit politer about it. I think it would be good at this point to agree to disagree, in vaccines and taking young pups out. Re read the joke about feeding dogs shavings posted earlier here. It kinda puts things into perspective. I tend to disagree with pups being allowed to socialize with other dogs until fully vaccinated but agree with pup going everywhere to get use to things. I took Yukon everywhere and into PetSmart and Petcetera and Superpet, at 9 weeks of age but I did not let him touch other dogs. Usually I kept him in a shopping cart but not always. It is owners choice and no one is going to read the post here and learn anything if we are to busy blaming each other and insulting one another. State your opinion and let the people reading form there own opinion. I'm sorry I ever posted anything here at all because I think it instigated too much. I will not post about vaccines or anything like that again. I have learned my lesson that, that is just to hot of a topic.

I think we all joined here for that reason. It's just that some people (including me) get worked up and insult others, you don't have to cry. None of us really mean it, just that we have anger problems ;) (joking). We all are (as a lot of people put it) "family" here :D. And as a family :D we argue and insult and nag and rant... oh and complain!

I just had to say that, because I hate it when I see or hear or read about other people crying...
yea but in this case i agree with yucka duck. wont mention any names. but one person in particular, dont worry not u babyblue, when i was arguing with them, i said if they kept insulting me in a public forum(not u either bigdog:)) i would leave for good, i was really i was disconnecting my name and saying poe says good bye(i was also saying sorry for trouble i caused), but then they wrote back, bye poe,(with a smile just to piss me off) and were making insults leaning towards noone will care if i leave. i am not one to cry, but i t made me sad for i loved this forum. then i t made me mad so i didnt diconnect my name and as a ''u dont tell me what to do" to her i stayed on.

No we can't in my opinion :) not too start an arguement. My family argues about a lot of things and call each other names and such. You just gotta ignore it. Prepare to meet some jerks in this world, I already met a few :) This whole arguing things and rolling eyes is nothing that should be taken personally. We just get frustrated with each other... I don't believe any of us really mean it... I'm bad at explaining my opinion/beliefs, so sorry if I confuse you...

no u make sense, we all meet jerks deal with them, but we sure dont try to find them,,, do we ?
so when we go to chaz, we arn't looking for a fight, meaning a lot is misunderstandings. you make sense richie, no i would not promote crying for every little thing, but if you read yuckaducks story to how she cam eto be this way , maybe we can understand
also by saying cant we all just get along, (trying to break the tension in the ice) not trying to say "the world should have no areguments".
no ur not confusing:)
just some people are more sensitive then others, they cant halp it, so its hard to just tell them ignore, although i do think u make an excellent point on how people should take it, its just not always the case.:(-and no richie dont worry what u said was cear as a bell:)

thanks, Lea, a lot of people get confused when I try to explain things :D. I just hate it when I hear about someone crying, I don't want Yuckaduck to cry because we act stupid at times , calling people names and such and not having a polite debate. And Elinhunter, Yuckaduck, and you are right... we should atleast TRY to get along, and it will probly be best just to end this. To tell you the truth, I don't get why we got all workd up, but you guys remind me of my family when we are all together

good ..lol glad this didnt turn to a fight...sometimes a fights good..helps us to become stronger, but when we just wanna chill and talk about our dogs who we take great pride in who wants to fight?
i no i have been in some here, well arguments, but i wasnt looking for them, and here they are more hurtful then helpful, since it usually ends up someone putting down some1s dog..which people will understandably get defensive about.

That's why I don't think anyone should take it personally :). I mean, think of it this way, do they really know you? It would be stupid for THEM to call you or your dog stupid because they hardly know you. Except that you have a dog :), that's how I try to look at it. And ofcourse there has been times where I thought they deserved to be called a name or too:rolleyes:, but I truly try to be nice :)
