I'm sure this has been posted already, but hopefully nobody minds me posting it again. :D

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Backyard Breeder and Puppymiller's Big Book of Old Excuses
1. When called on bad breeding practices, ALWAYS claim that you are merely an innocent posting as a favor to a friend or family member.
2. Point out that everybody you know breeds this way, therefore it must be okay.
3. Claim that "snobby show breeders" are only criticizing you because they want to corner the market on puppy profit.
4. Claim that a Champion in the pedigree is just as good as 56 Champions in the pedigree. Not that it matters, because you doubt that there is such a thing as a dog with 56 champions in the pedigree.
5. Claim that you are just trying to produce good pets, therefore good pets are all you need for breeding.
6. When asked about health testing, enthusiastically point out that your bitch had a health checkup before breeding.
7. Be sure to mention that you do not need to run such health tests as OFA, CERF, thyroid, cardiac, patellas, etc., because your dogs look healthy and had no visible problems at their last vet checkup.
8. Point out that these tests cost too much and would cut into your profit margin. Be sure to champion the right of poor people to breed dogs.
9. Confidently assure worried rescuers that no puppy you produce, or any of their puppies or grandpuppies or great-grandpuppies will end up in shelters because you have a bunch of friends who have told you that they'd like a pup from your bitch.
10. Point out that you don't need Championships or working titles on your dogs because you are breeding for temperament and your dog is really sweet.
11. Silence those annoying people who ask about your health guarantee by assuring them that buyers can return any sick puppies and you will replace it with another pup as long as it got sick within a certain amount of time of sale and as long as you don't
think the buyer did something to make the puppy sick.
12. If your breed or line is rare (or you have a "rare" color, or believe your breed or color is rare), be sure to remind everyone that you do not need to show, temperament test, or health test your breeding stock because you are doing the world a service by continuing
this "rare" breed/color/line.
13. No matter what anyone else says, claim that you obviously know what you are doing because you've been breeding for a long time. Point to the hundreds of puppies you've pumped out over the years as proof.
14. If this is your first attempt at breeding, make sure to remind everyone that you have to breed your dog because how else are you going to learn how to breed?
15. Assure everyone that your dog does not need to be shown because you were assured by someone at Petsmart/the park/the vet's office/a friend that your dog is a perfect example of the breed.
16. Always remember that "rare" colors, oversized or undersized dogs, and mixes of popular breeds are great selling points. Anyone who doesn't think so is obviously not in tune with their customers' wishes.
17. Claim that your dogs are better because they are not inbred, as inbreeding obviously produces sick/stupid/deformed dogs. If breeding poo dogs or other mutts, always point to hybrid vigor as proof of your dogs’ superiority.
18. Remind everyone that you do not need a waiting list because your puppies are cute.
19. Assure everyone that your puppies will not end up in shelters because they are cute.
20. Claim that your breed never ends up in shelters in your area, therefore your puppies will never end up in shelters.
21. If asked why you think your dogs are breeding quality, point out that they "have papers." Extra points awarded for using the phrase "AKC Certified." Double points if those papers come from the Continental Kennel Club.
22. If you sell a sick puppy, always blame the owners for making it sick. If the owners are clearly not responsible, blame their vet. (see #11)
23. If presented with irrefutable evidence proving you wrong on any excuses you have used, pretend your server did not receive the post/e-mail.
24. Claim that none of the rules of ethical breeding apply to you because you only intend to have one litter and therefore aren't a "real" breeder.
25. If all else fails, tell everyone who criticizes you to get a life.
This is doubly funny, because I met a guy today who is looking to breed his 1 1/2 year old Golden for some extra money on the side and doesn't see the issue with it. I flat out told him that there is a critera to being a good, responsible breeder and he didn't meet it. He didn't like that too much.
I love this list. It's funny, because I've seen so many people use multiple excuses that completely match this list.
The Backyard Breeder and Puppymiller's Big Book of Old Excuses
1. When called on bad breeding practices, ALWAYS claim that you are merely an innocent posting as a favor to a friend or family member.
Rare breed comment: I have a puppy from him and im only posting about my dog. Even thou I am promoting his litter.
2. Point out that everybody you know breeds this way, it must be okay.
Rare breed comment: But you are the only one showing , testing , working so I guess you. Everyone else just breeds them so you are the ODD ONE thus wrong. IT is a rare breed you know.( tongue in cheek)
3. Claim that "snobby show breeders" are only criticizing you because they want to corner the market on puppy profit.
Rare Breed: They show dogs to sell puppies, I dont show my dogs because they are the "real deals"
4. Claim that a Champion in the pedigree is just as good as 56 Champions in the pedigree.
Rare Breed: Showing means nothing but live off what your dogs parents did 1-3 generations back claiming " champion bloodlines" when you breed your unproven dog. Then state USA judges do not know the rare breeds, but go to a show any way with a " friend" show a dog, brag about it here.
Then promote
the breeders who DO not show why? they have the real deal.
5. Claim that you are just trying to produce good pets,.
Rare breed: Real working dogs that live in yards dont need to be shown.
6. When asked about health testing, enthusiastically point out that your bitch had a health checkup before breeding.
Rare breed: These breeds are "rare" thus they dont need any testing.
They have been xrayed but NEVER provide results.
Xray one dog and live off one pass out of a 20 not tested and or failed.
7. Be sure to mention that you do not need to run such health tests as OFA,
Rare Breed: They can walk, thus why bother, the Vets tables are too big to xray the RARE breed.
8. Point out that these tests cost too much and would cut into your profit margin. Be sure to champion the right of poor people to breed dogs.
Rare breed : But claim the good breeders are the ones making money.
With the 2-5k a year on shows and the 2-3 hundred for each test.
Yes us breeders who spend more then we make - some how turn a profit but the BYB who do not spend anything - lose money? for the rare breed asking price of 1-2 k
9. Confidently assure worried rescuers that no puppy you produce, or any of their puppies or grandpuppies or great-grandpuppies will end up in shelters because you have a bunch of friends who have told you that they'd like a pup from your bitch.
I have friends who insisted I breed them im sure they will take a puppy you know they are Rare
10. Point out that you don't need Championships or working titles on your dogs because you are breeding for temperament and your dog is really sweet.
My dogs parents are tested by figthtng other dogs in rings . This "tests" their working ability. A specific Guardian dog LGD FOLK LORE .
So no need for a CGC or a ATTS tt or a Protection title
My dogs want to fight other dogs this makes them a PROTECTION dog
COUGH COUGH
11. Silence those annoying people who ask about your health guarantee by assuring them that buyers can return any sick puppies and you will replace it with another pup as long as it got sick within a certain amount of time of sale and as long as you don't
think the buyer did something to make the puppy sick.
Rare breed: Threaten to sue them- blame the breeder that did not produce the sick puppies for bad mouthing you to the buyer with the SICK dog
12. If your breed or line is rare (or you have a "rare" color, or believe your breed or color is rare), be sure to remind everyone that you do not need to show, temperament test, or health test your breeding stock because you are doing the world a service by continuing
this "rare" breed/color/line.
Rare Breed :Rare Rose colored glasses but these out of standard rare colors do not have the same inherited health issue the AKC breeds have because NO studies have been dont on a breed with 1000 dogs vs 10,000 dogs
No study = no health issues prone to odd colors.
13. No matter what anyone else says, claim that you obviously know what you are doing because you've been breeding for a long time. Point to the hundreds of puppies you've pumped out over the years as proof.
Where are they know? dunno know but I did breed 100 of them.
14. If this is your first attempt at breeding, make sure to remind everyone that you have to breed your dog because how else are you going to learn how to breed?
Rare breed: This is my last litter im selling out all stock so no need to critique the breeding but pls buy the puppies. NO contracts required.
Skipped a few due to repeating.
25. If all else fails, tell everyone who criticizes you to get a life.
All breed point is we do have a life a qualifed life in dogs.
Something you breeders from the bottom of the barrrel will never have.
Great post thanks for letting me vent.
And there are all the variations on OFA-hates-me. Paperwork got lost in the mail several times, they keep contacting OFA with no response, someone hacked into their personal computer and used it to change OFA records (true story), they are radiographing again when their dog has severe degenerative joint disease in the elbow, etc.
How about other excuses like
"if the dog don't breed at least once is going to get sick or die of sadness and lonyness" sadly this is encoraged by some vets >->
"I have the female, you have a male, so why don't breed them?"
"a dog needs to be breed in order for him/her mature"
If you as a person why they breed wit a dog that has a fault of the standar or behavor problems "I only know that (dog from the opositve sex of mine) so, wit who else I gonna breed it?"
I think one of my favorites on there is that a person wont know how to breed the right way unless they just go on and do it.
Or something like that. This one:
14. If this is your first attempt at breeding, make sure to remind everyone that you have to breed your dog because how else are you going to learn how to breed?
One of the times I was most exasperated with a BYB (similar to what Sapphire said) was on a chi forum that her 9 year old dog was wasting away from loneliness and that when she bred her it was like magic- she was happy again taking care of puppies, and she was going to breed her again because she was getting depressed again.
I *think* Jessie was there and might remember it.
Sadly, I was the one who posted up that thread :( She said that she only bred her elderly chihuahua because it made her (the chi) so happy to have puppies :rolleyes: On top of this, she bought this dog on a spay contract from a breeder.
First I don’t know any breeders, or BYB, I haven’t gotten any dogs from Breeders or BYB or Stores. My dogs have come from shelters or rescues.
But I have read many posts like this one around the internet. And I always have to wonder if there isn’t any truth to number 3, even if just a little bit.
Ok hate me now I can take it.
