I just adopted my Layla a few mths ago. She is a purebread old eng. Bulldog. She came from a "puppy mill" where she was the main breeding female. She is 5 yrs old and has had several litters. I'm trying to give her a very loving peaceful home, she has had a hard life I'm sure! I love her to death and she is the best dog I think I've ever had! She is the 1st and only Old eng. I have ever been around, what a cool/unique breed! Does anyone have any advice or commets about this breed? I'm thinking of getting another old eng. in a year or so, I'm hooked! She has become my best bud!

I moved this to the breed forum, where I think it will get more attention. No breed advice from me either, but I love the picture! Please post more.

The biggest things with OEB's is their tendency towards skin issues, heat stroke and joint problems (many times exacerbated by overfeeding/weight issues). I've known more than a few that end up with UTI's on a regular basis, seemingly because they can't quite reach around to clean well enough. Anything over 70 degrees requires close watching; conversely they cannot tolerate the cold well either because they can't warm the air they breath before it hits their lungs. They also have a hard time swimming, so watch any OEB when around water.

The neat things about them is they can be pretty laid back, awesome dogs. The people I know who have them just love them to pieces and usually have more than one.

There seems to be some confusion.....

It appears as tho your dog is an Olde English Bulldogge. They are a recreation of the original bullbaiting dog of Victorian England. This breed is a larger, healthier breed than the English Bulldog.

I own four if them and just love them. We also have an English Bulldog and the OEB is a much better choice if you are wanting a dog that can be involved in all of your family's activities. They can and do swim well and are also much more heat tolerant than their English Bulldog cousins!

Here is a link to the a Registry: http://www.ioeba.net/

Also a few photos of my crew:

Good luck with your girl and thank you for saving her from a horrible life! Please feel free to e-mail if I can be of any help!

the oldes are bigger not necessarily healthier. David Leavitt and some of the people working w/ his line produce fairly healthy stock, but easily 3/4 of the breeders are BYBs producing junk for $$$$.

Ms. Hale
i like the bottom dog, built like he could do the job.

Thank you, Pops2! The bottom dog is our bitch, Tyra. She is half Leavitt and half Hermes. The pups are our keepers out of Ty and by a SBK bred dog.

You are so right about having to really research this breed and it's breeders. Not all is what is seems with the pedigrees! So sad that the breed has moved far beyond what David started. But when you do find a well bred dog you have a remarkable animal!

Take care,

He's a Leavitt cross.

We got him from folk that actually use the dogs as farm dogs. They help with the cattle, guard the place, etc.

However, although Chipper's not dysplastic, I didn't really like his hips that much so we neutered him. And although he'd LOVE to have a go at the hogs, there's no way he's agile enough to bring 'em down and not get seriously injured or killed in the process.

We've done some weight pull with him in the IWPA, but other than that, he's just a bulldog. He loves to stick his head through wooden privacy fences, dig holes completely under the foundation of the house, and hump his jolly ball. You know, live a dog's life. :D
