before dinner every night i put on the cartoon channel for the kids to watch while i get dinner ready before my husband comes home, well i had everything cookin so i sat down with the kids to watch cartoons, mind you it was an old cartoon im thinkin early 50's? well the scene was a toy store, all these dolls where singin and i remember seeing something about ABC the TV station...well it was harmless, well as i watched on and my kids watched there was a scene where these dolls came out of a box and where fighting..then i noticed, it was a man and woman, and the man was hitting and slapping the woman around! this is a kids cartoon!!! i couldnt believe what i was seeing, as i watched this man doll slap around this woman doll...nice thing for my kids to see or anyones kids to see!!! i hurried up and changed the channel...

i only let my kids watch about 2 hours of tv a day..the rest is filled with activities and stuff to keep them busy...

i just could not get over this!!! its like saying its ok to slap a woman around!!!
needless to say i will never watch that channel again and i have sent an email to the cable station complaining about it...

i had to vent...i know its none pet related..but it just made me angry...i was abused by my first husband...so this struck a huge nerve...

sorry for the rant :(

Those older cartoons reflect the mentality of the times. Every seen one that was around in - I think - about the '20s or '30s called Krazy Kat? Wow! And even some of the most venerated television programs reflect the same mentality. Ever seen any of the episodes of "The Honeymooners?"

Use it as an opportunity to talk to your kids about what's wrong with treating others that way. Things don't go away if you ignore them, and any chance to talk to your kids is a good time to find out what they think and how things they've seen affect them.

Oh, the times, they are a changin' . . .

It is amazing!!!!!!!! I remember when I was growing up that most of the cartoons were extremely violent. I wouldn't want my kids to watch them now.

The funny thing is, there have been studies done and the kids overwhelming express surprise that adults get so upset. They think we're nuts to worry that they differentiate between "real" and "cartoon." They're more savvy than we give them credit for being. Personally, I doubt Bugs Bunny ever made anyone go bad . . . ;)

I get where your coming from 100%. But like what renee said back then it was acceptable because it was pretty common and considered to be ok.

But in most childrens defence most kids know its just a cartoon and don't take it very seriousely. Thye take it more seriousely when they see a movie or show with real people doing these things because they associate that with those are real people and so it must be real life. Both my brother and Sister have children and neither one worries to much about what their children see on the cartoon channels. The only "real life" shows they watch is Disney or Animal Planet. When the kids are aloud to watch more adult shows like both my neices and my oldest nephew watch Lost there are always discussions about what is going on so they understand that it IS just a show and some of the things these people are doing IS wrong.

But once again I do see where you come from with wanting to limit your childrens tv watching and its always great to have them busy doing other things.

How about that coyote that the roadrunner dropped an anvil on his head a zillion times???? Nothing more violent than cartoons, especially in that era. But, we watched and it didn't make us want to do any of it. NOW.....the 3 stooges.....WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???? lol Grown men spending all their time poking their eyes and hitting/slapping each other. I know....all you guys LOVE the stooges.......hehehehehe  you can tell that nobody was worried about children's programming back then. Course, I remember my daughter...at age 5...thinking it was odd that Bert and Ernie lived alone. They looked kinda grown up, but sounded like kids. I could never explain it....I always told her their parents were in another room or something. :D

Well, as my Mom says, Melaine (she is 4) is allowed to watch cartoons becuase she knows that they aren't real. One of the cartoons Mel watches is called Yu-Gi-Oh and it is rated Y7 for fiction violence. And, if I remember right, in the Origanal version (the Japanesse version) they actually had guns in it. (They've dubbed that out here though.....thank heaven. I mean, my word, this is a kids program!)
But yes, some cartoons may be violent, but, kids can tell the difference between cartoons and real life. (Or at least Mel can.)
Now, Melanie has watched The Grinch (the real movie) which is PG and she was terrified that the Grinch was going to come and eat her. She has never been scared of, or thought to do things that were in the cartoons, but in the real movies.....yes. She has said some things and been scared of things quite a lot.
