I cooked Caiza up some Lamb kidneys, ground lamb meat, and ground pork this morning along with celery and sweet potatoes. I just boiled everything in water and added one can of low sodium beef broth rinsed everything once it was done cooking to rinse out the fat and that will be his dinner tonight mixed in with 3/4 of a cup of the TWO lamb and apple :)

Caiza ate that for a while until I figured out it was just the chicken that was giving him issues. Then I went to Evo red meat and then Timberwolf lamb and apple. Why don't you try the TWO lamb to? At least that hasn't been recalled...........YET! I hope it never does happen!

Zeus and Voodoo have been eating homemade food too. I go for a mix of about 50% meat, 15% veggies and 35% starch. This is what I put in my last batch:

Ground beef (not too lean, they need some fat too)
Ground chicken
Chicken livers
Eggs
Sweet potatoes
Peas and carrots
Rice
Plain yogurt

I just boil the ground meat in water, add the veggies and mashed sweet potatoes, then add the rice to thicken the food. When serving, I add a generous dollop of plain yogurt to each bowl. The meat doesn't have to be ground, I just use it because it's easier for Zeus to chew with his damaged gums. I make an enormous cauldron of food and store it in the fridge or freezer. It lasts me about 7 days.

If I remember right, you have to change up protein and veggie sources frequently in order to be sure a variety of nutrients are provided. For instance, you might use turkey, fruit and fish in next week's meal. I read that you also need to include some kind of organ meat. If your dog is picky, just grind everything in your food processer before cooking. That keeps him from just picking out his favorite tidbits.

But ugh....beware that organ meat. I made a mistake of using beef kidneys once. The resulting brew smelled unbelievably FOUL! It made my entire house smell like warmed-over vomit. I had to throw it out--wasted $15 worth of ingredients. The boys loved the mix, but I couldn't stand the idea of that putrid mess stinking up my fridge and freezer.

Red, Why can you buy into cooking for your dog but not feeding it raw? All you have to do is balance their food sources to feed successfully, whether home cooked or raw. You'll spend just as much and feed the same things you'd feed raw if you cook it yourself.

Remember that cooking breaks down a lot of the nutrients. It will render the bones useless as food since you don't want to feed them once they are cooked. Without the bones you'll need to supplement calcium from other sources.

As a general recommendation- raw or cooked- watch how much kidneys you give. They only need an ounce or 2 and not even every day. It's very rich and will cause the runs. Also- why get rid of the fat? These are not people, these are dogs and they need fat and process it differently than we do.

Remember everyone- home cooking for your dog isn't like cooking for yourself! While rice is a good bland filler for a dog that isn't feeling well, you don't need it in their diet on a regular basis. Also watch the broth, even low sodium has more sodium than they need. They'll get sodium naturally from a lot of the meats they eat especially if it's fed raw.

www.thepoop.com

i got this recipe from there.
Luscious Lamb Dinner

2 C Lamb (Chopped finely or ground)
1 C Rice (Brown or white cooked)
1 half Carrot (Large, grated)
1/2 C Yogurt (Plain, whole fat or 2 %)
1 Clove Garlic (crushed)
1 tsp. ground Flaxseed
2 1/2 C Water

Cook the lamb by boiling in water with the garlic. Cook over a low heat, covered, until the lamb is tender. Cook the rice according to package directions, using the water that was used to cook the lamb. Mix lamb mixture, carrot, and flaxseed with the cooked rice. Mix in yogurt and serve after cooling.

i am thinking of making this tonight

So, what do you think would be a good thing to start out with, Dan?
If you were going to do raw, I'd start with chicken leg quarters for at least a week. Feed between 2 and 3% of your dogs weight per day to start. If your dog has issues with chicken (and you are sure it's chicken and not some other ingredient in the food you were feeding) then you could try another bland meat like turkey. Your dog will most likely get the runs for a couple days when you start this, but be patient. Daisy had the runs for 3 days I think, and then she was fine. After that, when we'd introduce a new food for the 1st month or so she'd get the runs for maybe 1 day. Now we can give her new stuff and she has no issues with it. It will take them a little bit of adjustment.

I don't want to rewrite info that is in a lot of other posts, if you search for raw feeding here you'll see lots of posts that have good beginner info, as well as posts with links to sites that can help you out.

One of the mistakes people make while feeding raw, and I'm sure this would occur with home cooked as well, is giving too much variety at once. This causes 2 issues. One, your dog has too many new things to adjust to at once. Two, you have no idea what the cause of the dog's reaction is from. By gradually adding new food sources you can find which ones work and which ones don't.

rabbitsarebetter- watch that garlic! I wouldn't feed that lamb recipe every day with the garlic. Also- flax seed is not assimilated well- it's for omega fatty acids, you can get that with fish or fish oil capsules in a form that is easier for your dog to digest. And I simply don't get the rice thing. It's just filler! As are most veggies. I'm not saying don't feed them if you want to, but they really don't need it as more than a small percentage of their daily diet.

I think I'm getting a handle on it... thanks, so much Dan.

I'm vegetarian, so I didn't even know what a chicken leg quarter looked like until I searched on google.

Oh, and I have no clue what it was about the Evo that didn't agree with him.

Dan, I tried raw for 3 or 4 months awhile back. Caiza's stool was never firm always runny :( I don't know that I will ever feed raw again but maybe........I do cook his meat just till the outside turns brown and it is still pretty pink inside ;)
