Ok so I took Maya to the tennis courts to run this evening. they are 100% fenced in. Although i am not happy with the way the doors are, They have a chain on the very top so you can only open them just enough to get in, but you cant lock them. I just hooked Maya's leash around the door and I had some twine (dont ask why) so I cut the twine and tied the rest of the doors shut (I took the twine off when I left) So, anyways there are three tennis courts in this big fenced in area, no grass :( . and then right outside of the fence there is a basketball court (where 5 black college guys where playing basketball)

Well after securing the doors I let Maya off her leash. She barked at the college guys a few times. (I didnt know what to do, so I distracted her by chucking her tennisball with the chuck-it) The black guys came over to the fence and one of them said "what is that?" so I said " its a dog" (I know, smart-assed of me) then another one said " what kind" and I told him that she is a doberman, and he said " no she isnt" to which I replied " okay" and went about my business playing with Maya. A while later the guy came to the fence again and said " whats on her head?" and I said " well when you think of a doberman you think of pointy upright ears, right, well dobermans arent born with their ears like that, they need surgury to make them that way, and after the surgury you need to train the ears to stand upright" the guy didnt know anything about dobe's not being born with upright ears and was actually pretty interested, he kept asking me questions about the surgury, and how old Maya is and stuff. In the end he said she was cute.

I forgot my camera but Maya had fun chasing her ball. She only brought it back to me like twice :( so I spent most of the time chasing the ball so i could throw it for her again.

any advice to teach her to bring it back?

Dobermans are notoriously bad retrievers... ;)

I taught Ilsa to retrieve by taking TWO toys to the park - throw one, then wait for her to pick it up - then get her attention with the second toy and *hopefully* she'll trot back to you and the 2nd toy with the 1st toy in her mouth. Ilsa learned that I wouldn't throw Toy #2 for her unless she brough back Toy #1... and you've seen how crazy she is about retrieving!

start in a hallway where there is no where else to bring it but back to you. Then if you have a garage..stand outside the garage and repeat. Hopefully by that time you will have installed the idea that this makes you happy and most dogs are perfectly willing to play for just that reason. Victor came to me after being teased and chased. A nono for any good bird dog so all he thinks for a long long time was grab it and run..taunt and tease back. IT has taken two years for i didn't force train him, just kept up in a gentle manner, ignoring him when he didn't bring it back. Now it is three times the thrill that he wants to bring it to me. And more and more he is doing just that.

i have actually had lots of people ask if she is a min pin... (it hasnt happened within the last month) but when I first got her....

even the receptionist at the vet's office asked me once...
I had to have Maya boarded with them for a weekend and she was like " ok is Maya a full sized doberman or is she a min-pin" I just shook my head and said " she is a doberman pinscher"
