BBC NEWS | Europe | Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize

But for what? He hasn't even done anything. Gitmo is still open, we're still at war, and there's still the omnipresent threat of nuclear weapons from Korea and Co.

Instead the committee chose Mr Obama, who was inaugurated less than two weeks before the 1 February nomination deadline.
So I'm a bit confused as to the 'why'. I think there were other more deserving candidates who've actually, ya know, done something?

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus.

"Why? What has he done to merit this already?"

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," said the Norwegian Nobel Committee in addition to commending "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

lol thats why I guess. well, its not really his fault they gave it to him.. but I agree, I dont understand WHY

regardless, its a great honor :)

Yeah it is kind of irritating. I mean I like Obama and all but I always thought a nobel peace prize was supposed to represent something epic... and he hasn't really done anything epic. He isn't a war mongerer, Ok. He's trying to reverse some of the things George Bush did but I'm not wow'd by him.

It kinda bothers me how everyone fawns over him. When he does something of merit, sure, recognize it, but in proportion to what he's actually done.

Maybe they should ask the American public if he should earn this.

But but, he's the savior. :p (that's meant as a joke)

I, too, don't get what he did to win this. Makes no sense at all to me. He's just done a bunch of talk.

I was puzzled by this. I don't think that Obama has done anything to deserve it but I also won't give him grief for winning it. Unless he somehow manipulated the committee, he has no say in who it gets awarded to.

This just means that the Nobel Price for Peace is meaningless, I suppose.

I'm slightly offended on behalf of the other nobel peace price winners. All Obama has done at this point is do a lot of sweet talkin'. Like Xandra said, he hasn't done anything epic.

I was just thinking that before you read your posts. I was trying to think of other winners.

It just reeks.

I just don't get why everyone is so mad at obama, its not like it was his fault they gave him the award.
whether he deserved it or not is debatable, but I dont think it being given to him is something thats his fault.. if people should blame anyone its the nobel peace price commitee people or whoever it is that decides these things

Agreed, Fran. This is not a knock on President Obama and it shouldn't be. I am proud of him that the committee thought so highly of him to give the award.

The committee, however, was probably on drugs.

Yup. Not irritated at Obama by any stretch of imagination! Hell, assuming he didn't contrive the whole thing (and I don't think he did), it was probably a little awkward to get an award like that. I would feel awkward!
