i took one of my friends to one of the shelters because she is looking for a dog. well she wore this punk outfit. i don't dress punk but a couple of my friends do. i've gotten use to it. anyway we walk in and the lady sees me and smiles but then my friend walks in and she gives her this 'there's no way in hell i would ever even talk to you' look. so she says 'hey i was wondering if we could look at your available dogs' and the lady won't even answer her! so finally i asked the exact same thing and the lady was like 'oh...' looks at my friend and says 'what are you looking for' so my friend answers and the lady doesn't say anything and keeps looking at me. so finally i say 'a smaller/medium sized dog. not sure what breed. just wanted to look' and she goes 'oh well we don't have anything' and then asked us to leave!

i was so mad! they were so nice when i went in and adopted yoshi

I don't know, I think it's normal nature. I agree it's going too far, but they are thinking of the dogs, and I think it's human nature to think that people who have that kind of life/tastes wouldn't be able to take care of a dog correctly. People are scared of what they don't know... I'm not trying to justify her attitude by any means, I just think most people would rather see their dogs go to someone who is dressed more normally is all. I mean, I don't think your friend would get a job so easily either if she was dressed that way.

think of if you would wear clothes like that to a bank in asking for a loan for a house? Im sure the dog wont care what she wears as long as she takes care of him/her...but society is cruel in the sense they want everyone to fit the norm. Maybe your friend can dress down for the day. If she really wants a dog she can accept how mean people are. I know its not fair but its life!!

Well she should just go back to the shelter one day when she isn't, in my opinion. I'm sure she gets this kind of reaction from everyone before they know her, but it's just human nature.

i know i just thought she'd have more of a chance when she was atleast wearing new/clean clothes than the hillbillys that come down wearing wife beaters and torn up jeans.

Yeah, mean people suck. This lady too it a bit further than most though. She should have at least talked to your friend, like she should do with everyone, about the what/where/why's of adopting a dog.

What exactly was your friend wearing? Bondage pants and a fishnet shirt? Jeans and a HIM shirt?

u will never be able to change our society. i have a few tattoos and a belly piercing, and short red hair at that time. people SWORe i was a drug addict!!!! i never have and never will take any type of drugs, but of course, they wouldnt understand. its whatever they see on the outside...which i personally think is totally wrong. u should always give someone a chance to get to know them, and then judge if u were right or wrong about them.

well her top was just a greenday shirt and her pants where.. they're hard to explain. they're black and red with uhhh a lot of zippers... i know i explained that poorly but i don't know how to describe it lol.

honestly she didn't look that bad.

she does have her eyebrow pierced too. and a couple more than normal piercings on her ears. but i would think of uit this way 'she has a ton of money to go blow on all those piercings' i went with her on a couple and those things cost a crapload. i'm to afraid of needles to get any though x.x

I second Nedim's question!!!!! In today's society the North American culture is so diverse there really is no "normal" anymore. I can't stand people who stereotype!!!!!!! Urgh deffnately the worst type of assumption out there! I have an acting buddy named Clinton who tends to dress like a bad@$$ biker boy who enjoys going to hard rock and heavy metal concerts. Soooooooo many people who don't know him avoid even eye contact with him and advise me not to be with him cause he'll influence me to do "bad things". That's so untrue!!!!! Clinton's the biggest sweetheart ever and who would never do any wrong to anybody! He's the guy that taught me to shoot a long bow and a cross bow properly!

If you have a job dealing with the public, it's crucial you do not stereotype or you'll seriously drive business away! Although really, no one should stereotype because yu miss out on making some amazing friends that way!

This is me and Clinton after a late night of target practice after the archery tournament.

Exactly, OC. That girl shouldnt be treatred different for the way she dresses. I dress a certain way, does that mean that I'm an unresponsible owner? Far from it.

I have my septum pierced and can dress freaky. But I also have "normal" clothes and a retainer for my piercing. I think it's totally wrong that people are so judgemental. It's wrong, but it's a sad fact. I used to dress freaky wherever I went, but now I'm at the point where I only wear my piercing out and dress freaky when I'm going out with friends or to a club. Otherwise, it's just not worth the hassle to me.

My sister doesn't dress "normal" (in style). She likes baggy jeans and tight shirts. She does have piercings - her eyebrows are pierced and she has a few piercings on her ears. She has a short haircut and like to dye her hair. Sometimes she'll get glitter glue and put her hair up into a mohawk (it looks really cool). People do seem a little freaked out by her sometimes, but she is one of the nicest and coolest people you will ever meet. She's a ton of fun. One thing I really like about her is that she doesn't care what other people think about her. She shaved off her hair because she has "two heads of hair" nad it got too hot lol.

I meant by normal, that doesn't get everyone's attention, that you won't notice.

It's NOT my point of view, but you have to realize that it's the point of view of most people out there. And people who like dressing that way need to realize it, too, and accept the consequences.

I don't think the people who dress "abnormaly" are the ones that need to change or accept any consequences cause there shouldn't be any. The ones who need to change are the people who automatically assume a person has certain traits because of the way they dress.

I'd go back! Maybe the hag was just having an off day. Or if not, ask to see every kind of dog they have, if she still refuses to assist, turn her in for discrimination! She probably wasn't the manager was she? Nobody deserves to be treated like that b/c they're wearing a band t-shirt and flashy jeans.

Yeah, people will be nasty. They will think you are a lying, stealing, screwed up drug addict. It's not right, but it's reality.
