I overheard a conversation today about how peanuts are not allowed to be given out on most airlines now a days. The person that was talking about this was moaning about "if you're allergic just don't eat it...it's population thinning...it's not my problem that you have allergies etc. etc." This just blew me away. I am anaphylactic to peanuts and being in a plane that served them would not have a good outcome. Actually, the ignorance I find when I explain to people about my allergy blows my mind in general. I've had people say all kinds of things to me. "oh you aren't anaphylactic" (Yah think I'd know ;) ), "carry a epipen and it doesn't matter" etc. First of all, an epipen does not help much of anything. It is useful for a few minutes and until an ambulance can come. This is more of a rant than anything, but i also just hope people on here don't think like this. There was a discussion about peants on airplanes on another board I frequent and people were outraged that they didn';t serve them anymore. (wtf, theyre just peanuts?) and that people with allergies just should know not to eat them and nothign will happen. Man oh man. Have a little respect and education! It's very, very hard living with an allergy.

I have a mild peanut allergy. I think that people need to be more educated about the allergy ;)

I gotta say, what if you just like nuts?

I mean restaurants are goint nuts (forgive the pun) about people with allergies and banning them outright. What if you LIKE nuts? What then?

I don't like nuts, but I'm always up for being devil's advocate.

Peanuts to some, bullet in a cocked chamber to others.

My son also carries an Epipen. I still almost lost him 9 times between the ages of 18 months and 21 years...I'm still on edge and worried all the time. He's fatally allergic to tree nuts, bee sting and shell fish. If anyone who thinks that serving peanuts on airlines or peanut butter anything in schools had ever experienced almost loosing a loved one over something so trivial, they'd change their minds.
For some, a peanut allergy is so bad that airborne particles can cause death.
A child died in a grocery store because someone broke a peanut butter jar in another isle.

Sorry but I see the argument for the right to peanuts in enclosed spaces selfish or at the very least uninformed.
This allergy is NO JOKE!!!!
And by the way, the Epipen only gets you to the hospital...if you're lucky.

:lol-sign: idunno Mom - I think I'd rather them not digest instead of a rash & swelling developing in your throat, mouth, and on your lips. I can't imagine it being a severe allergy because I already can't deal - craving PB&J

I can't imagine, and I think Dr2little put it best !

I don't see the big deal.

Some people with peanut allergies never have to eat a peanut. They can just smell them or touch something they have touched. Or used a bowl that could have contained them once......... You get the idea. :)

I mean peanuts are not like jello or something.... they are a known allergy to many.

In an enclosed space....especially in an airplane, miles in the air.....
I can fully understand not serving peanuts....
And I am not allergic, nor is anyone I know.

I can also understand not feeding peanut containing products in schools.
If my child would suddenly become allergic to something this widely known for allergy too........ then I would want them home with me, not in a school environment. I say let the PBJ sandwich be served at home. :)
By the way that is my kid's favorite after school snack.......... but I am certainly not offended if they would never get one in school. ;)

You know what is funny is that years ago when I was a kid in school (I'm in my early 30's) you never heard of peanut allergys and parents weren't told that your kid can't bring an PB & J to school. My daughters school is not peanut free but peanut safe so they separate the kids with food allergys at different tables of the cafetorium. I think the schools who are "peanut free" is ridiculous IMO I understand the severity of the allergy but I have a friend who has a son who will only eat PB&J and PB has lots of protein so he needs it because he has to eat lunch. I remember a few years back when my daughter was a year old, the pediatrician told me to try to keep her from eating eggs and PB. I personally think the longer you keep kids away from these foods the more likely they are to have problems. I feel for people who have food allergies, my dad is allergic to shellfish but yet he still eats haddock, scallops and clams. He basically can't eat shrimp or lobster. I'm just glad I can eat anything LOL!

Exactly..and thanks. I can't tell you how many things that this particular allergy ruined for my son. He's now 21, so things were not so controlled when he was young as they are now.
He was never allowed to eat at anyones house for fear that the butter used may have been contaminated. Summer camp was out. He ate lunch at home due to a few incidents at school that threatened his life. One little boy (grade 3) who knew of Jordons allergies, thought it would be funny to trade his peanut butter cookies for Jordons cookies in his lunch bag. Kids just don't get the seriousness of the situation and don't understand consequences. The list goes on and on but I'm glad things are changing in schools now.
Weird how something so small and seemingly innocent as a peanut can take the life of someone in minutes.

I agree with you here and it brings us back to how people were raised and how they choose to lead thier lives. Some see through binoculars and some have a broader view. Like some are more concious of others and thier surroundings while others look more internally.

If the airline provides some other type of none peanut snack I don't know what people are whining about. They can't live without peanuts for a couple hours? What, do they have some sort of peanut addiction? I LOVE peanuts, but I would gladly just eat them at home if it made life easier for someone with a severe allergy.....they're just peanuts. But I also have a food allergy, so I can see where they are coming from I guess.

Its just like when people are allergic to cigerette smoke - people just brush if off.

I get fairly ill when i'm around the smoke too long - people think its just b/c I dont like the smell.. its that AND the fact that I get fairly sick over it.

I dont think not having peauts on a plane is that horrible at all lol Its definately not the end of the world if you can't have a peanut during a flight. Bring other snacks lol crackers, cheese.. lol

And yup, the epipent is basically just a shot to help you GET to the hospital. It releases adreniline into you so you dont go into shock from your allergy..

*shakes head* some peoples kids..

No, they shouldn't be banned entirely. We can't just ban everything people are allergic to, but we can try to be a little considerate. In tight, enclosed spaces like airplanes I really don't think it's a big deal if they don't offer them. The fact is it would be very difficult to get somebody to a hospital immediately if they had an attack in an airplane.

Well, I guess I am just a selfish and uninformed person...............
PSSSST...wasn't aiming anything at you Jess. It's just if you live it, it's so much more serious than people realize. I've had parents yell at me because I asked that Jordons school parties didn't include anything with peanuts. Now that's selfish and uninformed.

So do you think the peanut should be banned entirely?
Banned from where?.............
I just am not going to complain about not being able to get a peanut on a plane...
Or my child not getting a PBJ at school.... (which is not even the case here yet, but I wouldn't complain if it was)

I mean peanuts are not required as a snack in public places........
Again...... What is the big deal? If you love peanuts, buy some at the grocery store and eat them at home... Lol... You can even throw the shells on your floor. :)
