The media center at my school had this big sign saying "HAPPY HANNUKAH", I smiled but then became puzzled. I asked the vice principal that happend to be there at the time, "There is a hannukah sign, but not a christmas one... why not?". She replied with "Oh, school's aren't allowed to say 'Merry Christmas' because it is excluding other religious people who happend not to be Christian". I paused, then smiled and said "But there is a Happy Hannukah sign wouldn't that exclude people who are Christians or people who celebrate kwanzaa(sp)?" She frowned and pretended she didn't hear me. I'm not religious... at all... but, this has got to be one of the most stupidest things I've heard!

I've been hearing more and more about this subject. Boston has a tree lighting at the state capital each year and for about a day or so, they were calling it the 'Holiday Tree' instead of 'Christmas Tree'. They felt pressure from several non-christian groups. However, it was quickly changed to 'Christmas Tree' This really ticks me off. It is OUR holiday and we, christians, should be able to celebrate it how we want to. I'm all for diversity and respect other's religious beliefs, but this is just going to far. Why can't people show us the same respect that they insist on receiving from us? This just pisses me off. I wanted to post about this same subject a while ago, but decided not to because it just upsets me. It is the 'Christmas' season and it just brings my spirit down.

Merry Christmahanzakah everyone!

Does nobody else wonder why you hear about the de-"Christ"ing of the holiday season from a lot of politicians and major retailers? You know, people with a stake in political correctness that has nothing to do with religion?

You know, freedom of speech is a great thing. Although, sometimes too much freedom can be bad. There's no solid ground anymore. I mean, there's no more morals and more scapegoats out there. A lawyer's job has become easier, in my opinion, only because there are soooo many loopholes and freedoms to conjure a defense on. OK, I'm stretching it a bit. It's just hard to put into words what I'm feeling about our society today as a whole. I take comfort in knowing that my children have been brought up to respect another one's views, mind their P's and Q's, have manners (like yes sir, yes ma'am, please and thank you). At least it makes me feel better. I've taught them that there is NO EASY WAY OUT. They have to earn everything that they receive, whether it be just by being a good person or getting their hands dirty doing a job; or minds working doing their homework! lol

So if the schools start removing Christmas does that mean when they have the Christmas show every year the kids wont be singing any song that uses the word Christmas?

I really don't see it as a holiday for any religious group. I think the main focus is on Santa Clause and Frosty the Snowman. Oh and giving and receiving gifts. If someone wants to celebrate by putting up a nativity scene and going to Christian Christmas plays, that's their way of doing it. I think it's ridiculous the political correctness everything gets attatched to it these days. Politicians really have more important things they could do rather than have days spent on deciding on such trivial issues.

Our freedom is slowly being taken away by the government. We are starting to live in a world where the minorities are right and their way should be respected...and our way should be supressed. We are living in fear of our past and the way they are handling it they are taking away one persons freedom to give another so called respect. Respect is earned not taken.

It's similar at my daughters' school...it is a very multicultural school so there is very little focus placed on Christmas at all. But one thing that I do applaud the admin for is that they still hold their annual Christmas concert with all the carols (albeit not religious ones), but they include everyone by also having some multicultural performances at the end as well. The kids learn about all different seasonal celebrations not just Christmas, although it would be nice if SOME emphasis were placed on the Christian aspect. Why can they discuss the reason behind the candles at Hannukah, but not the reason behind the Nativity?

I'm quite sure that if I moved with my children to another country, the schools there would not neccessarily cancel or tone down their celebrations and play up Christianity

America was founded on Christianity it's as simple as that. And while it's not a STATE religion as you say, it is a traditional holiday. I strongly resent the "Merry Christmas" being replaced with "Happy Holidays" and this resentment is growing among many as Political Correctness is carried to the extreme. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. And whether you are Christian or not - that's what this holiday is all about. What does "Happy Holidays" celebrate? Kwanza? Hanukah? The fact these other religions fall in or near the same date as Christmas is no reason for those faiths to be offended. The is Political Correctness run amok.

I suppose if we want to carry PC even further we can go back to the original Pagan celebration of this time of year and simply wish every one a "Happy Winter Solstice." But I wonder who THAT would offend.

Pfft. That's weird. Just put up a whole bunch of signs saying Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, and all of the other holidays! So no one will be excluded!

Well, as Seth from the OC would say: Merry Christmukkah!

It's infuriating to me. Beyond stupid.
I'm tired of the "your religion isn't allowed, but theirs is" kind of thing. The united states government is getting TOO involved, what with whittling away rights that were not to be infringed, and it's apparently all just to cater to these groups who bitch about a Christmas tree! Honestly, they say it'll offend those who don't practice that religion, but those people have just as much of a right to express themselves. And why would a christmas tree offend, while a "Happy Hannukah" sign wouldn't? If you want it to be a freaking joy-joy world where nobody has to see anything that they disagree with, you can just ban public displays that have anything to do with religion. ANY religion - it's not fair just to target Christianity which is what's currently being done.

To be blunt, people just need to grow some balls and learn to get over it. You cannot get your way 100% of the time, and those people that seem to expect to get their way 100% of the time, will continously be looking for something to complain about. Even more reason to ignore their narcissistic ways.

With that said, am I a christian? Nope. Does christmas trees, and baby jesus displays affect me? Not at all. Why? Because I IGNORE it! Really, though, it is an easy concept.
