Hey everyone, I've had my first dog, 3 year old rescue toy chihuahua for almost 2 months now, and the only thing he ever plays around with is a bully stick and he refuses other things. I've bought all sorts of toys, chewable, dog rope, ball, stuffed. I don't think he knows how to play with them, I tried putting peanut butter on some of the chewable toys but he leaves after he licks it off lol. Anyway, my dogs really playful and it'd be nice if he had a toy he could mess around with during those times I can't oblige him.

Some dogs just don't seem to get anything from toys. My Kharma never has, except to steal them from Shiva and hide them.

Have you tried some of the interactive toys, where the dog has to figure out how to get the treats out of the toy?

This is actually true for many dogs :)
I know quite a few dogs who other than things that they can eat (like kongs with food in them or bully sticks) have no interest in playing with toys by themselves.

Most of the time, the "fun" of a toy, is that we are playing with them.. otherwise, it's really quite boring lol

I would try Kong toys (with food shoved inside), Booster cube (with food inside) but you have to roll it around to get it out.. this will encourage him to get moving around and play the game so things fall out

My old man, Zorro, never liked toys. He didn't even like chew toys... If it wasn't soft and fully edible it wasn't worth it. The hardest thing he'd chew was one of those denta stix. I did try a treat puzzle toy, that worked ok as he could roll it about and keep getting the food out of it (I used his regular food - an attempt at adding exercise to his eating habits). The only problem was that he would constantly lose it under things and we'd not find it for months...

On the other hand, Zorro is super jealous. Any time we have another dog here (usually foster dogs) he will steal any and all toys and hide them under my bed (or elsewhere in my room). He won't chew them or play with them, but the moment the other dog isn't looking the toy/chew is gone. He will also steal stuff from the garbage and store it... Once I found two unopened single yogurt tubs that I had tossed for expiring. They were about 2 months old... under the bed... Thank goodness he never bothered at them enough to pierce the covers  He will lick them though.

The only thing Zorro ever chewed was my clothes - my underclothes in particular. For a while when he was younger I had to make sure I never left a bra on the floor. I'd find my bra straps severed as neatly as though someone took scissors to them. I actually suspected my toddler son for a while... Later in life he decided he preferred dirty undies... ick.

Even now I am constantly rescuing Elwood's rawhide chew from Zorro's spot in my room. He also likes to go into Elwood's crate to prevent Elwood from sleeping in there (despite having his own perfectly nice sleeping spaces). He's not aggressive about it, just persistently sneaky. Silly boy.
