Yep, I figured that is where you got the list, and I didn't blame you. ;) Just making it clear that those 'breeds' shouldn't be bought. lol

I have a Giant Schnauzer that does not shed. However, that only means you have to do the grooming.

A monthly haircut you can do, OR have it done for $60.

All dogs shed (skin cells aka dander), but you are probably referring to shedding of fur. American Hairless Terriers do not have any fur to shed (well, I have to take that back, the coated variety does), so, I guess they'd fall into the category of dogs that don't "shed".

Low allergen breeds can be wonderful for some who are dog-allergic and no help at all for others. Not all people who are allergic to dogs have the same allergy. Some are allergic to downy under-coat fur (this is what poodles, terriers, etc lack), but others are allergic to animal saliva or dander. If you are allergic to thier saliva, coat won't matter. If it's dander (common) low-sheding will help because less fur around the house = less dander around the house, but that person may still have to limit direct contact with the pet.
Before you add a low-allergy breed or mix to your home it might help to have the allergic person spend time with dogs of the same breed and see how it goes before you commit to a pet to avoid heartbreak latter!

The "nonshedding" breeds such as poodles, porties, bichons, schnauzers, etc DO shed, but unlike labs and goldens, the hair remains trapped in the coat, creating mats. Dogs such as lhasas, shihs, yorkies, silkys, etc are low shedders. They will leave some hair around the house, but no where near the amount of hair that JRTs and chihuahuas do!

My lhasa doesn't shed much either. But don't be fooled! Just because they're shedless doesn't mean they don't shed at all. And be careful what the person selling you the dog says....My parents bought us a corgi when I was little. They told them he was a shedless, barkless dog. What a crock!! Do your own research. This is a great place to do it!

Shedding

Poodles do not shed at all, I have had poodles all my life, my latest being 13 years old and they do not shed. I recently got a maltipoo which is a cross between maltese and poodle and they do not shed either and they are lovely little dogs also

Yeah if they're crosses between two dogs that don't shed they shouldn't shed, if they are only half poodle they may shed though (like the cocker mixes for example).

Either way, I wouldn't support the breeder of those mixes, and go for a maltese or a poodle.

You are correct, sir!

I know you're a ma'am, let me have the dramatic effect. :)

The myth about non-shedding dogs (excluding the hairless breeds such as the Chinese Crested, AHT) came about because some breeds (maltese, bichon) only have the single coat and shed much like a human does. It's not terribly noticable, so ergo they "don't shed at all". Poodles, when being bathed, will clog a drain in a heart beat from all the trapped hair being washed out of their coats, especially if it's not a very close summer-type cut.

The hound coat, the very sleek, very short is at least not terribly noticable. Beagles shed by the bucketful, as do labs and anything with a longer coat such as Australian Shepherds.

Poodles

Well I have had poodles for over 30 years and never found them to shed, never when I bathed them did I find any hair, the only time is when you are brushing them and you come across a matt and get it out would I find anything in the brush. I think the original poster was asking a simple question on which dogs do not shed and everyone has gone on a rampage on that all dogs shed and that is not true. If she has allergies a poodle, maltese, bishon, schnauzer and a few others or crosses with those breed would be a perfect fit for her. Yes some people are allergic to the dander on the dogs but if she already has a cross breed little dog and is fine with that Im sure she would be fine with a little maltipoo or something like that also

I know chiahuas don't shed. I'm not sure how to spell that breed. They are yippy dogs (bark quit a bit).
LOL  I have a Chihuahua and he sheds a lot. I can brush him and end up with a ball of hair that is the size of the palm of my hand. None of my clothes are without white Chi hair (which is a pain when most of your clothes are dark :p ). It's become my favourite fashion accessory, not by choice though. :D

All dogs do shed regardless of breed. If you are looking for a hypo-allergenic, low shedding dog I would suggest a Poodle, Bichon Frise, Coton de Tulear, or hairless breed. Please remember that breeds such as the Bichon take a lot of work and grooming also.

Sorry, but I must disagree. I have a short-haired Chihuahua and her coat sheds like crazy! 1 minute spent on your lap and your clothes will be covered in little hairs, which are hard to get rid of since they stick in clothing so well!

And on another note, please don't generalise the breed. My Chihuahua definitely is not yippy, she hardly barks at all.

as EVERYONE has said...
the ONLY breeds that DONT shed are breeds with NO HAIR.

however some breeds shed less than others, and some shed in such a way that the shed hairs get caught in the coat (causing mats so YES your poodles DO SHED if your occasionally catching a mat!) these minimal shedders are better for people with allergies, but require MORE coat upkeep...dogs like yorkies, poodles, silkies, malteese lhasa puff cresteds ect ALL require frequent grooming, bathing, brushing coat clipping...

also remember that its usually not the HAIR people are allergic to...instead its actually the dander...and the dander of one breed may bother one persons allergies and not another...
i have a friend with a cocker who found out 6 yrs later when she added a yorkie to her home that she was allergic to dogs...she found a new home for the yorkie and was fine again!

so if allergies are your problem then your best bet is to find GOOD breedes of low shedding breeds and send some time with each!

if your concern is simply shedding cause you dont want hair on your couch...then you need to figure out exactly how much coat upkeep your willing to put in.

a poodle is a great breed but requires alot of coat upkeep...AHTs, cresties and other nekkid breeds are WONDERFULL but require exensive skin care and upkeep to stop pimples sunburn ect.

you also have to keep in mind that different breeds have different excersize and behavioural needs too.

chihuahuas can go either way...all chis shed, short haired chihuahuas shed MORE than long haired chihuauas, long haired chihuahuas shed minimally and many allergy folks find longs ok...but they do shed and like ALL breeds, have specific needs.

PLEASE just dont fall for the "poo" and "doodle" fad. proximatly 25% of those mixes have a poodle low/none shedding coat. the other 75% can be anywhere from half way between to whatever its mixed with.
dont support these bybs and dont support puppyshops. find a good breeder...meet the dogs, find out what the upkeep to each breed is and see which one calls to you...
or visit your local shelter and adopt a little mix.

My chihuahua does shed, but not very much.... If I brush her really vigorously with my hand, I'll get about 5-10 hairs off her. She's even big for a chi, about 7 pounds. I think a lot of shedding has to do with what kind of food you feed your dog..... I've seen dogs of the same breed, one with a beautiful, shiny coat that hardly sheds, and the other with a dull coat that sheds a lot year-round, and the difference is in the food. Of course that doesn't mean that a good diet will stop shedding, and it certainly won't stop the seasonal coat-blowing, but I think a good diet does help a lot.

So basicly your saying a poodle cross labrador would be a prefect fit too, All the poodle cross labradors i've seen shed more then what a purebred lab ever does. They have to get clipped every month to just stop the shedding. Maybe crossing a poodle to a bichon you won't get shedding, But crossing a poodle to a breed that does shed won't guarantee that the dog will or won't shed.

Also sorry to say Chihuahuas shed hair my chihuahua sheds alot i'm always for ever carrying around white hari over my clothes.
