Good friends of ours are having an oops litter. They have a female shepherd/lab mix, and have always been very responsible about keeping her contained. Someone's blue merle Aussie got loose, got into their backyard, and proceeded to have himself a good time. Needless to say, our friends are NOT happy about it. They've already given the Aussie's owner a good verbal lashing, since his dog is notorious for getting loose and the owner swears he can't afford to have the dog neutered.

So Mama dog is about six weeks along. Before you ask, they plan on spaying her after this litter. The wife asked my advice about pregnant bitches, and I gave her a few small tips I read on Chaz. I even offered to help her when the dog goes into labor, if only as an extra pair of hands. Anyway, the wife asked if I want a puppy. :yikes:

NOOOOOO!!! I DON'T NEED ANOTHER DOG!!!

But the mother is SO sweet and gentle. She's about 40-50 lbs, has tan-and-black coloring that reminds me of a malinois, and is very well-mannered and friendly. And could you imagine how cute the puppies will be?

It doesn't help that I'm already suffering from puppy fever lately. Please stop me. Please.

No offense, but I see this as totally their own fault. It's always blamed on the boy, but everyone knows that in order to keep a bitch in heat from getting preggers, it's the owners job to keep a very, very close eye on them. No backyard is secure enough.

No its not totaly the owners fault. Yes they should have kept a better eye on her, however, the boys owners are equaly at fault for letting thier dog run loose, and also get into someone else's secure yard. If he had been attacked and killed his owners would be SOL. Personly I would make them responsible for 50% of any and all expenses for this litter.

Yeah, you already have a solid and a brindle. You need a merle bitch for keeping the boys in line.
Is it bad that's already part of my musings?

And I swear, only on Chaz can you post about considering a third dog without everyone thinking you're insane.

You shouldn't get one you shouldn't get one you shouldn't get one you...

Okay, I can't do that anymore. :D I second/third everyone's opinion. If you can't get a matched set, get a a complete opposite set.

Yeah, while the males owners are at fault to a point for letting him loose, why on earth was a bitch in heat in a backyard unsupervised? Any why didnt they do an e-spay instead of letting her have the litter?

Did they not know she was pregnant? (I'm assuming they did since they know the father). Too bad they didn't do a spay/abort before she was so far (were I in that scenario with a foster I'd still attempt it but I understand not wanting to risk surgery with an owned pet). Hopefully it will be a very small litter and they all find good placements, best of luck to them.

How exactly is the yard secure if another dog got in?
