Ooh! Good solution!!
I have had 2 clients in my time with "professionally trained" attack dogs. I was the last resort for both of them. If I didn't work out, it was straight off to be euthanized. They were dangerous. There is no national standard for people who "train" attack dogs, so any yahoo off the street with a mean streak will do it. They'll charge you an arm and a leg to give your dog so many emotional disorders that he'll more likely than not crack.
Here's an idea. Go for Schutzhund training! (
http://www.dvgamerica.com/whatis.html) It's a dog sport that focuses on a dog's tracking ability, obedience, and protection. You can compete locally and nationally with your dog, and it gives him an excellent and
safe education. It will teach him discipline and strengthen your relationship, and if you ever get into a situation he will know what to do. In my opinion, Schutzhund is a wonderful sport; like martial arts for dogs. It will give him fulfillment that regular attack training would not, and it won't destroy him mentally. In fact, GSDs tend to excel at Schutzhund, so you could have the next national champion on your hands! I would guess that there's any number of Schutzhund trainers in New York. I'd ask them to show me some credentials, and make sure you never let them do something to your dog you're uncomfortable with. It
is possible to train for Schutzhund using only positive reinforcement, so don't let anyone convince you otherwise. I think this would be a wonderful solution for you.
Let me know if you need help finding a Schutzhund contact in your area.
PS - I can't
stand PETA.
