BigDogDaddy is too heartbroken to share this with you all but he'd like you to know.

He's been having trouble with his GSD Rocky for awhile. He's had some problems from the begining, partly because the breeder sold him at six weeks... tough for a first time dog owner especially one with so many other responsibilties.

Things have gone downhill and Rocky has bitten BigDog more than once. Sadly, with the help of his father he's decided to give him up. He's looking into find a non-kill shelter or gsd rescue.

He's quite sad about this and I hope he'll get the support of the forum. It's not an easy decision to make.

I hope wherever Rocky goes his new owners will be kind enough to keep in touch with BigDog. And I hope BigDog stays a part of this forum. I dog lover is a dog lover... even when they are temporarily without a dog.

Lots of hugs for you BigDog. (((hugs)))

I know everyone is going to be understanding. This is hard for BigDoggy . . . I can't begin to imagine having to do this, but it gives Rocky a chance to find a home with an older, more experienced owner and have a happily ever after.

German Shepherd Club

The German Shepherd Club of America could likely help via their rescue department. Lord knows the poor guy has made a heroic effort with his dog! It is very easy to end up with a dog that just was not bred for temperament. The fault lies with the "breeder"...not the owner.

You made a brave and wise decision, and obviously love him very much by giving him a second chance.

I think it's the right decision too. There is nothing wrong with that, and I do also think that the saying 'there are no bad dogs, just bad dog owners' is not quite accurate anymore. Some dogs just require people with a lot of experience to get rid of them problems... And I don't think it always works.

I'm so sorry BigDog, that you have to make this decision. I've struggled with a similar situation before, and it's one of the most wrenching feelings. I don't really know how to say it without being blunt, but some dogs and some owners just never 'click'. You're a wonderful dog owner, so don't think otherwise just because this didn't work out. There are some things that are beyond your control.

I'm sorry I don't have any input as to finding the perfect rescue for Rocky, I'm not active in the breed and I don't know of many GSD rescues. Manchesters made an excellent suggestion, the GSDCA would most likely be willing to help you.

I hope you keep in touch with us at Chazhound, too. Lots of hugs to you.

BigDog, I want you to know that it was a very hard decision you had to make and we're all here for you. Rocky has been a challenge for you and you've done the best you could. Don't ever forget Rocky and know that there is a home waiting for him somewhere that will give him lots of love. Please don't leave us here on the board. We'd love for you to stay.

I am so sorry. I know having to make that kind of decision is tough. I am almost in tears myself just reading this thread. I know rocky will find a wonderful home and I am sure he will never forget you and you will never forget him. Best of luck in the future and I hope everything gets better soon. We all feel for you and wish you the best *hugs* good luck and we hope you can cheer up soon :(

You're a good dog owner...to recongize that sometimes a dog and owner don't click, as it was said. When you see that it's not getting where it should by this time, choosing another home for him with someone very experienced is really the most unselfish and wonderful gift you can give your dog while there's still time to rehabilitate him. I think it will all turn out and your pain will ease up in time. You won't always feel like this.

Perhaps a little later you can think about getting perhaps an easier dog to raise or an adult rescue who's been through puppyhood, has a little training and just needs a home and love. Puppies are incredibly difficult, even for people who have had dogs for a long time. You have my support and respect.....and know that you're doing the right thing. You'll feel better in time.

You know, I had to rehome a dog once... He was a min pin puppy my ex bought impulsively from a petshop. We didn't know anything at the time about how to take care of a dog, and even worse, we were away 9 hours a day... He was with us for 6 months in an apartment, then we moved to a house, at least he had the yard but we were still away as much. We had no clue about training a dog, he wasn't housebroken... Basically, the worst dog owners you can imagine.

When we divorced, none of us really wanted to keep him. He was going to have to move to his parents, and I was going to have to get a small apartment, so it wasn't going to be possible. So we gave him away to a young couple in the country who had a big yard and another dog. I hope he is happy now (it was over 5 years ago).

I'm still ashamed of it, and of course I didn't mention it when I contacted the rescue about Tips, and I guess it's the first time I actually admit it here... Thanksfully I have changed, but in your case at least you know you did your best. Some dogs just need experimented people.
