Hi there,

My name is Kelly - I'm new! Although my husband and I had family dogs growing up, we just purchased the first one of our own two weeks ago.

Her name is Kona, she's a Golden Retriever. We joined the forum to educate ourself about training and health care mostly, but also to educate people about our recent mishap.

Two weeks ago, we purchased our puppy, from a woman named Julie Mills. Julie lives on a farm in Richmond, Minnesota, which is near St. Cloud. Her family owns and runs the Gold Meadows Hunting Preserve. Last week Kona was rushed to the emergency room. She was in ICU for 4 nights, hooked up to an IV because of coccidia and roundworm parasites, along with several ulcers.

If our little puppy Kona had these parasites, the rest of the litter had them as well. Somewhere out there, there are 12 other golden retriever puppies with these viruses - many in Minnesota, some in North Dakota, and some unknown to us. We're hoping we can warn the other owners before it's too late. The situation we went through was the scariest thing in the world, and we'd hate anyone else to have to go through what we did.

If anyone else purchased a puppy, born on mother's day, May 11th 2008, from Julie Mills, feel free to contact us. After having gone through the horrible experience and much education from our live-saving vet and forums/articles on the internet, my husband and I may be able to help, as we know for a fact that Julie Mills will be no help to you in a crisis.

Healthy wishes to you and your pets,
Kelly

Round worms occur fast. Puppies are wormed starting at 4 weeks old. And coccidea is from birds- could have gotton at your house as they develope fast as well.
How long did you have the puppy before the puppy saw a vet?

Um, coccidia and roundworms are not viruses... most puppies are born with worms of some sort. They could have picked up the coccidia in numerous places. Sometimes worms are really hard to get rid of and need many many doses. If they gave even 2 doses of dewormer that at least took precautions and treated them. What vet or shot records did they give you?? Why would she be in the hospital for 4 days for worms? Are you sure it was just worms?

Did you ask for vet records BEFORE you got the puppy? Did you ask for proof of deworming and vaccines BEFORE bringing the puppy home? If not then it is as much your fault for not educating yourself on what to ask a breeder. Good breeder or not...

The only thing about the story that sets off red flags to me is that they possibly gave you a puppy that is much too young... that is really irresponsible.
